Crimean Medal, Turkish War Medal & Indian Mutiny Medal
« on: Tuesday 16 June 09 14:04 UTC (UK) »

I have a relative in a photo with 3 medals pinned on him. I also have the actual medals that are in the photo, and they are the Crimean Medal, Turkish War Medal & Indian Mutiny Medal.  Is it possible to find out if the medals were actually awarded to him ?  I have shipping records Plymouth to Melbourne, Australia in 1871 occupation:Carver, with his name Nathaniel MATTHEWS age 37 (ie born 1834) and a marriage certificate for his daughter listing him as Nathaniel Charles MATTHEWS, occupation:Groom.

Many thanks

If you have the actual medals, start by looking at the rims.
You should find lots of vital information engraved there, eg name, rank, number, regiment. Examples here:
http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/indian_mutiny_medal.htm

With that information we may be able to tell you more, but that would be a good start.   Wink

neil,

I have been all over them, and all 3 medals have nothing on the rim.  I did this several years ago,
and had the idea that all were engraved before being awarded, but recently read an article that
said that a lot were presented, and the recipient organised their own engravement.  I had a vague feeling that perhaps my relative may have been the  wearer, but perhaps not the actual recipient of the medals.
I was sort of hoping their may have been a listing somewhere of people who had received the medals, and match them to my ancestor.

There are medal rolls for sure, but there's no Nathaniel Matthews on the Indian Mutiny roll for example (the British Army roll, doesn't cover HEIC service).
In the photo you have, is he wearing uniform? If so, perhaps we can tell more by seeing the photo.

This is the photo I have.  I was given the medals by my grandmother about 20 years ago, and her sister in law sent me the photo about 10 years later.  I am having trouble tracing Nathaniel Charles MATTHEWS.  I have death certificate for his wife (who is in the photo), but cannot find any trace of him or his death.  I have shipping records of their immigration to Australia (in 1871) but can find no record of their marriage or birth etc in England.  I was hoping if I could link him to the medals, it might fill in some of the gaps.
