Marmaduke BUCKLAND
« on: Tuesday 16 June 09 16:12 UTC (UK) »

Hi R/Cs

I wonder if any of you can unlock a family brick-wall?, there are at least a couple of new found cousins who would like it knocked down. this chap Marmaduke has been puzzling us for a long, long time.

We think we know he was born abt 1680/85, in Wexham/Waxham, we also know he married Ellin Robertson, in St George's Chapel, Windsor, in 1702, this has been confirmed by those lovely people in the archives.

What l would like to know is !) in which county was Wexham in, Bucks or Berks, at that time, 1660/65.
Or did they move things around like todays politicians do. Will be putting the same question on the Berks site.

2) just who?, was permitted to get married in the Chapel, yes l know the question has been asked before, it would be helpful to get a dollop more info about it, and what books are there about the rules.

Many thanks in advance
Ken

I don't know the answer to your second question - though Windsor Castle has a very helpful archivist who would be able to help.

As for Wexham- definetly in Bucks, and, as I know from making enquiries of the RO, no parish records survive before 1728. I have an ancestor from Wexham who has disappeared into that particular black hole!!  Roll Eyes

In the absence of a baptism record, have you tried looking for a will for old Marmaduke?

Hi Jillruss

Thanks for the info, pity about the parish records, its going to make it a lot harder to find her, Wexham was where his wife Ellin Robertson, came from, sorry for the wrong info, senior moment.

He seem to have come from Langley, any chance you could have a look for him, we know also that  he lived in Stoke Poges, after marrying, until 1761, from which he disappears off the map, so to speak.

Haven't looked for any old wills, well not me, as all the details l have indicate that ag labs were their normal jobs, as well as market gardeners.

Thanks Ken

Hi Ken,

I'm afraid I only have marriage records for Stoke Poges and Langley Marish - not baptisms.

As both are/were in Bucks, your best bet would be to request a name search by Bucks FHS - very quick and very inexpensive. When you can't get to Bucks to see for yourself (I see you're in Lancs - I'm in Yorks) it's an invaluable help.

www.bucksfhs.org.uk

and then click on 'database searches' in the Menu in the left hand column.

I also, have all of the above information on Marmaduke Buckland.

Although I can't yet trace him as a direct descendant of mine, I suspect he was related to John Buckland of Langley who married in St John's Chapel, Oxford in 1703. He married Anne Dawson from Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire. This John Buckland is a direct descendant of mine.
I believe John was the son of John Buckland of Langley (abt 1693), who died in 1750 in Langley, and Jane Hall of Stoke Poges (abt 1693), who died in 1751 also in Langley. They married in Stoke Poges in 1696.

I believe there is a link between the two families in Langley and Stoke Poges. But I can't as yet connect the two.

I know this doesn't help you, but I thought I would just throw it in! Somebody might be able to find a link somewhere.

Along with Grumpygrandad, I have guessed at Marmaduke's birth date as about 1680-1685.
