Hi Lucy

I can see only one Ellen HOPKINS birth registered in Bermondsey 1841 to  1851: in 1846.

In 1851 Census, I can only see this one:

1 Wrights Buildings, Bermondsey, Southwark, Surrey
HO107 /  Piece: 1562 /  Folio: 442 /  Page: 24 /
Head: Mary HOPKINS 24, unmarried, House Servant, place of birth N.K. (not known)
Dau: Ellen HOPKINS 5, b Bermondsey

The house is shared with a seperate household, headed by  William MAYO 40, widower, Engineer and his 2 sons.

The IGI has an entry (not sure if submitted or extracted but seems to be on a large batch for St Mary Magdalene christenings) for:
Ellen HOPKINS christened 2 Jan 1846 at St Mary Magdalene's, Bermondsey, Surrey
Mother: Mary HOPKINS
Batch Nr: I029118

Cheers

Hi Ambly   Smiley

Many thanks for your help.

Had just been employing a little bit of guess work with the 1846 Ellen and the Bermondsey connection - was rather hoping she might belong to "a Sarah".   Wink

[But fingers crossed, that something might still turn up for "a Sarah CURNICK" in 1861. ]

Thanks again.

Hi Lu

How do you know Sarah Hopkins married Robert Curnick and not Thomas Kelly?

Marriages Sep 1856
CURNICK  Robert    Bermondsey  1d 84
Fletcher  Lydia     Bermondsey  1d 84
HOPKINS  Sarah     Bermondsey  1d 84
Kelly  Thomas     Bermondsey  1d 84

Thise doesn't seem to be any deaths for a Sarah Curnick of the right age unless her death was registered in 1898 in Kingston (this Sarah was born in Ongar Essex and married to Thomas).

There does appear to be only one Ellen Hopkins with a birth registration in Bermondsey. Ambly has already given the details.

Hi Valda    Smiley

Many thanks.

Yes, that was silly of me because I don't know which of these two men, married Sarah HOPKINS.   Embarrassed

[And I have to admit, that this search, is really one of just "grasping at straws". ]

The Sarah CURNICK being sought, died in New Zealand in 1875 aged 55.  ( NZ death certs of that era, do not record "place of birth" of deceased.   No NZ marriage found for Sarah).

Sarah, is known to have been the mother of an "Ellen (nee HOPKINS)".   [Of Ellen, the only positive NZ records are births of 2 children (1868 - 70) and a newspaper notice of her mother's death.    Ellen's d.o.b. is only an "educated guess".    No record found in UK, Australia, NZ, of her apparent marriage to a John Henderson.  No immigration records located.   A difficult and ongoing search continues for Ellen's death record.]

Thanks again.

Hi Lu

Sarah Curnick's death certificate gives her as the wife/widow of Robert Curnick? In which case the next step would be to obtain the marriage certificate because it does look as if the Robert Curnick who married in 1856 is not showing on later censuses in England.

There are at least two Robert Curnicks born circa 1820. One in Battersea Surrey married to Elizabeth and emigrated to Australia (she died on board the voyage in 1854) and one born in Melksham Wiltshire. He is found on the 1841 census but not thereafter.

Sarah Curnick's death certificate gives her as the wife/widow of Robert Curnick?

Hi Valda   Smiley

Thanks for the additional information.

Unfortunately, provision was not made on an 1875 NZ d/c, for the recording of a spouse's name (so Mr. Curnick's christian name is not known.)

Mmm ... I located the passenger list of the 1854 voyage to Australia and the Robert CURNICK showing there was aged 22 (b.c. 1832 ??)  ... that may be an error  ... I'll see if I can find the film and check this out further.

Appreciate your help.   Smiley

Cheers
