Minchinhampton help
« on: Tuesday 16 June 09 17:44 BST (UK) »

Hello all

Ive been going over my Pote family once again and Ive decided to look into my first Pote ancestor William Pote who was born c1807 in Bristol.

Now somebody posted on one of my threads a while back with a possible match to my Williams birth.
It was the only one they could find and it stated - William Pote - 30th December 1806 at St James, Bristol
Son of John & Mary

Now I looked on the IGI and couldnt find the birth but I did find a marriage for a John Pote to a Mary Howell on the 19 AUG 1805 Minchinhampton, Gloucester, England.

How do you think I can go about confirming or dismissing this info for m Pote family?

Many thanks

Danny

Danny,

A few years ago I spent quite a while searching the Minchinhampton Banns records many of which, for the first few years of the 19th C, are hardly readable but I did manage to transcribe a few.

For JP:-

"Banns of Marriage between John Pote and Mary Howell both of this Parish were published on (Sundays?)July 28th  August ? & 11th 1805.

John Pote of this Parish and Mary Howell of this Parish were married in this church by Banns with Consent of ____________   this  ???eenth Day of August in the Year One Thousand Eight Hundred and five by me (signed Thos Cook Curate)"

Both signed the record and the witnesses were ? Howell and Elizabeth Howell.

The marriage is also given in the GFHS CD of GLS marriages but details such as dates of calling, the curate and witnesses names are not given of course.  The date is given in the CD but I could not read it on the records.

You will notice that in Minchinhampton batch M049001 at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyGloucester_(A-M).htm#M the marriage is not given so it seems that it was deleted after an LDS member "used" it in a submission.  That submitted entry is the one you found.

BUT not all submitted entries were once extracted entries and are likely to be fairytales.

Regards

Chas

Thankyou very much Chas Smiley

So they were both of the parish, does that mean they were both born in Minchinhampton or just that they lived there a while?

Danny,

"Of this parish" means that the person has lived there for a qualifying period of three weeks but even then they may be required to produce a certificate saying that the Banns were called in their previous place of abode. There were a number of Banns called in Minch' with no marriages so maybe the marriages were elsewhere. Mine were called in three places!

As it is usual practice for brides to be married in their home parish and the witnesses I told you of might be Mary's parents it's a pretty good assumption that Mary had lived in Minchinhampton for quite a while and may have been born there.  Look at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyGloucester_(A-M).htm#M for her baptism.

You'll find no Potes in the above site so it might mean that John was from another parish.  Obtain Parloc from http://www.parloc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/parlocdl.html and search nearby parishes with the Hugh Wallis facility.  You might be lucky.

Regards
