I think it is getting messy now and as you say- too many Mary Anns and also too many Jones and Smiths when you look  Huh

Back to beginning (kind of) The Jones connection based on Mary Ann's place of birth.

1881 Joseph Smith born Warwickshire m Mary Ann
1871 Joseph born Righton m Mary Ann - living in Jones' cottages, Staunton on Wye  with other Jones families around.
**I had seen a Smith/Jones marriage but don't think it is right- 1854 and there is a mystery re the area.
1861 Mary A Jones still at home.
1861 Joseph ??

There are too many Josephs.

One thing is that there is a Ryton rather than Righton with Smith families in earlier censuses so perhaps that is his place of origin.

It does not look as though Joseph and Mary Ann had children.
Joseph does have a connection with Warwickshire so it could be possible that a relative of his had Ada and then J and M A fostered her and raised her.
The only thing I can now think of is going for a birth certificate for Ada Smith or Lewis if that is what you think she may be called.
There are several on Free BMD - some with second name but none with   'Lewis/Louise'  so  it is going to be difficult and possibly expensive.

On the other hand though, there is a birth for Ada Louise Haydon June quarter 1878 Birmingham. I can't be sure but I can't see her after her birth - there could be variations on the spelling of the name.

So there we are- it doesn't look too promising.

good luck

Thanks Heywood you've been very helpful.

I've been searching the bmd for births 1878 birmingham under possible names, trying to whittle them down. This is what I came up with after filtering out deaths.

I believe there are 15 possibilities left for the name variations i searched.

mar Ada Smith
mar Louisa Smith
jun Ada Smith
jun Ada Lewis
jun Ada Louisa Armstrong
jun Ada Louisa/Louise Haydon ( heywood mentioned )
jun Ada Louisa Warner
jun Ada Louisa Whitfield
jun Ada Louisa Whitfield (different ref number to the above)
sep Ada Smith
sep Ada Emma Smith
sep Ada Louisa Phillips
dec Ada Emma Smith
dec Ada Matilda Smith
dec Louisa Lillie Smith

The only name search i didnt do was just plain Ada (no middle name or surname) as there are hundreds as you know Sad. So im going to try and eliminate the above names before i go down that route. If anyone can help me eliminate these names it would be great.

thanks

Hello again,
The only thing that I can think of is looking at 1881 census for these people. Bear in mind though that you might not find them all- changes in place of birth/year of birth/middle name omitted etc.
The 188s is free to search so you could double check and even extend the search if you wanted to Warwickshire rather than Birmingham and even a +/- 1 year search for year of birth.
It's going to be difficult though.  Sad

cheers
