yep, spot on Laurina Smiley

so many twists and turns in finding her.

Do you mean that my summary was 'spot on' (I'm not Laurina  Grin)

Is there any other reference to the name Lewis? It does look as though it could be that in 1881 but has been transcribed as Louise.

Is that also the only reference to Birmingham?

What does 1911 give for her birthplace?

We have three birth places already . . .

Quote

1901
Ada Smith, lodger, 23, b. Hereford
1891
Ada Smith, 13, Servant Martha Maton? House, b. Kinnersley
1881
Ada Lewis - 2 (nurse child) b. Birmingham

Added: How close are these places?

Hi Laurina,

that's what I am trying to say... it seems that it could be quite possible that she is Ada ? who was nursed by the Smiths; raised as 'daughter' by them and subsequently Samuel but ...

I wonder if 1881 may be more accurate just because it is closest to birth and perhaps Ada is new to family.  Huh

my apologies, spot on heywood. Embarrassed

My father had payed a researcher in Hereford because we were getting nowhere and they came up with the Ada Lewis. We know the 1901 censuses are 100% correct because we recognise names.
As of the only reference to Birmingham i am unsure, does Kinnersley share boundaries?
as of yet we have not looked at the 1911 census sorry.

Looking at a map, all the places named so far in Herefordshire are close - but not to Birmingham  Roll Eyes

We thought it strange to be Birmingham too.

We were thinking that perhaps she'd gone into service (martha maton house) and thought of herself being born close by. Or had her carer moved from Birmingham.

I might have come accross a Jos Smith death in 1883 age 49, but don't quote me, as im not sure where that came from. Perhaps this had forced Mary to move?

Samuel Sinnock married a mary Ann Smith jun 26th? 1883 Weobly.

That death is on Free BMD but he is aged 39 yrs - but seems very possible. Mary Ann gets married in the next quarter.

I have been looking for the marriage of Joseph Smith and Mary Ann ? but nothing really obvious yet.

1861 census has a Mary A Jones Wormsley, living Staunton on Wye - both places figure in Mary Ann Smith's places of birth but it is linking her to Joseph that is the problem.

brill!

I was wondering where the heck that came from. Smiley

There is an Ann Jones lodging in the Williams household in 1901 with Ada, she is aged 89 b. wormsley, could this be a Mary Ann's mother?

I wish I could write the words for a really good scream!!!

There is a marriage for Thomas Williams to Elizabeth Smith 1857

1861 RG9; Piece: 1821; Folio: 49; Page: 34

2 Passage Hereford

Thomas Williams 30  Journeyman shoemaker b Mansell Gammage
Elizabeth Williams 30  b Weir
Mary Ann Williams 7  b Mansell Lacey
Albert Williams 10 Mo  b Hereford St Johns

Mary Ann was born before marriage - if that is the right marriage - she may then be Smith

oh dear!

I was thinking that perhaps there was a connection between Joseph Smith and Elizabeth Smith but then Joseph Smith (back to beginning) is born Warwickshire. Is that the Birmingham connection  Huh
I am now too tired and confused to think and things are becoming a bit too embroiled and perhaps need to be reconsidered.
