Descendants of James Sherriff & Martha Powney
« on: Tuesday 16 June 09 22:24 UTC (UK) »

Hi, I looking for descendants of James & Martha.

James Sherriff born c 1770 unknown place, parents unknown, died 20 Apr 1843 Abberley, Worcestershire.  Married in Abberley 24 May 1795 to Martha.

Martha Powney 1774 Areley Kings, Worcestershire died 01 Apr 1828 Areley Kings, parents Thomas Powney & Martha Dalton.

James & Martha had at least 8 children, William, Elizabeth, James, John, Thomas, Samuel, Joseph & Eliza.  Born 1796 to 1817, Abberley, Areley Kings and Rock.

The line I am following is from their firstborn William in 1796 but I am interested in all descendants.

Some members of the family spell SHERRIFF with one R or one F so a few varieties. Cheers Evelina

Hi Evelina,

At least the 1841 will tell you whether he was born in the county or not.

To go back further with your SHERRIFF try using the BMSGH Worcestershire Marriage Index (1660-1837) to see where SHERRIFFs got married.  Available by request at http://www.bmsgh.org/search/Wo_marr_index.html or in person at the Worcester Family History Centre.  Members of BMSGH http://www.bmsgh.org/ can visit their own library in Birmingham.

Using the above and the Worcester Burial Index (included in the National Burial Index) may be quicker than trawling dozens of parishes.

I take it that you have tried the on-line IGI for both ancestors and descendants.
