Towns named Waltham in Essex

I'm trying to sort out all the Walthams I run across.  I know about Walthamstow and Waltham Forest (a modern creation).   Not so clear about "just plain" Waltham, Great Waltham, Little Waltham, and Waltham Abbey.  (Not to mention Coldwaltham and Bishop Waltham which I believe are not in Essex.)

When I see plain Waltham in the 1800s records, which one are we talking about?

I think you have to go by context so that if the entry is
(a) in a register/census belonging to a parish which has 'Waltham' in its name or
(b) is in a register/census belonging to a parish near to a parish which has 'Waltham' in its name
then that Waltham is the one that was intended.
I believe that most people who kept these records were motivated by the wish to get the job done as quickly and as easily as possible so whatever short-cuts were available to them were taken.
Waltham Abbey (in the west of Essex) was included in the Edmonton Registration District in 1800s.
Great Waltham and Little Waltham are included in Chelmsford Registration District.
I think it will help if you are aware of the existence of the parish registers for Waltham Holy Cross (available at Essex RO):
Baptism 1563-1881 F D/P 75
Baptism 1800-1864 BT D/CR 391
Baptism 1881-1952 O D/P 75
Burial 1563-1878 F D/P 75
Burial 1800-1863 BT D/CR 391
Marriage 1563-1893 F D/P 75
Marriage 18001844 BT D/CR 391
Marriage 1893-1953 O D/P 75
I have just checked with the websites for Essex RO and Hertfordshire RO for the registers for Waltham Abbey but can't find them listed. At the back of my mind is a memory that says they have not yet been deposited i.e they are still in custody of that church. Maybe someone else can clarify this.

Just to let you know there is a Waltham Cross just south east of Waltham Abbey, (as I live quite close) the story of Waltham Cross is ,  there is a statue placed there because when Queen Eleanor died and they took her body to London, they stopped there overnight, at a place called the four swans, so the statue was erected in honour of her, the four swans sign still crosses the high street , but the Inn is long gone,although this is not the original four swans sign, as they were replaced in the 70s when a bus hit them....a little bit of history for you.

I've been off line for a while -- thank you for the replies.  Clincher you are right I have to keep expediency in mind; no one was thinking of Rootschat when they were filling in the forms. Nice bit of local lore jp, much appreciated to hear that kind of story.

Dear Sir,

Ref the Walthams in Essex, there are only three, Great Waltham and Little Waltham, side by side twixt Chelmsford and Braintree, and Waltham Abbey over by the Essex/Hertfotrdshire border, Waltham Cross is actually in  Hertfordshire, and all the others.....well just don't worry about them, they don't pay Council Taxes to Esse !!
