Elizabeth CHURCHILL - Crewkerne Baptism
« on: Tuesday 16 June 09 23:15 UTC (UK) »

I am perplexed! I have found two baptismal records for Elizabeth Churchill.

Elizabeth was the daughter of Charles and Betsy Churchill of Crewkerne. She was privately baptised 24th April 1856 and then baptised again 14th June 1857. Can anybody think why?

There is only one birth recorded - Chard RD Jan-Mar 1856 Vol 5c 542. No deaths or burials. I can only find one Charles and Elizabeth Churchill baptising children in Crewkerne at this time. Elizabeth age 25 is living with her widowed mother in the 1881 census, therefore the first baptism seems about right. I have exhausted my own ideas.

Hi

Both IGI entries are submitted records so are therefore unreliable.  Submitted entries are an indication that somebody else is researching the same family

Hello Carole,

Must admit I hadn't thought of looking in IGI for these baptisms.

My info came from the OPC. Although there are mistakes in the database I feel pretty confident these two are AOK.

The only difference in the baptisms, apart from one being private, is the father's profession. The Private baptism calls him servant the ordinary one labourer.

Usually a private baptism takes place if it is thought the baby isn't going to survive. The second one would possibly be a public one, or she was received into the church.

Details are the same in the Crewkerne PR transcripts.

Hi Ian,

Thanks. What you say seems good to me. I wonder why these obviously poor people would consider paying twice. Maybe Charles's employer paid for the private baptism!

Cheers
