1881: 58 Russell Street, Village of Dresden,  Parish of Trentham, Staffordshire
RG11 /  Piece: 2695 /  Folio: 137 /  Page: 39
Head: Richard TOMLINSON 33, Potters Labourer
Wife: Elizabeth TOMLINSON 32,
Dau: Emily A TOMLINSON 9,
Dau: Annie TOMLINSON 7,
Dau: Elizabert (sic) TOMLINSON 1,
Mother-In-Law: Mary HURST 60, widow, Potter's Paintress
All have "N.K. Staffs" as place of birth (N.K. = Not Known)

MARRIAGE:Mar Qtr 1870 - Stoke on Trent - 6b 234
Richard TOMLINSON and Elizabeth BROWN on same page
Not sure if this is them....

1871:13 Heaths Passage, Longton, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire
Head: John TOMLINSON 30, unm, Potter
Mother: Mary HURST 53, widow, Potters Paintress,
Sister: Mary HURST 14, Potter
Adopted: George CLAY 6,
Nephew: William SHAW 23, unm, Potter
ALL born Longton STAFFS

I'd have to wonder - if someone else (a neighbour?) of the TOMLINSON's in 1881 gave the Census information and a) wasn't sure of where in Staffs they were all born and b) wasn't aware that Mary HURST was actually Richard's mother, not Elizabeths? Especially since the most likely marriage has Elizabeth as surname BROWN.  "Mother-in-Law" could also be a term meant to mean "Step-Mother".

Cheers

Richard's widow Elizabeth is in Derbyshire in 1901, in the same household as her now married daughter Louisa. There is also what appears to be another child for Elizabeth & Richard, born after the 1891 Census.

1901: Petticoat Lane - Bolsover, Derbyshire
RG13 /  Piece: 3254 /  Folio: 132 /  Page: 45
Head: Edward DEAKER 31, Coal Miner Hewer below ground , b Fenton Staffs
Wife: Eliza Ann DEAKER 26, b Fenton Staffs
Son: Harry (or Harvey?) DEAKER 5, b Poolsbrook, Derbys.
Dau: Martha E DEAKER 4, b Fenton Staffs
Dau: Gertrude DEAKER 2, b Bolsover, Derbys.
Dau: Gladys H DEAKER 2 mths, b Bolover, Derbys
Boarder: Henry J RYLES 21, married, Onssetter Coal Miner below ground, b Fenton Staffs
Boarder: Louisa RYLES 18, married, b Longton Staffs
Visitor: Elizabeth TOMLINSON 53, widow, b Longton Staffs
Visitor: Lawrence TOMLINSON 7, b Longton Staffs

MARRIAGE: Dec Qtr 1900 - Mansfield (border District Derbys. and Notts) - 7b 134
Henry John RYLES and Louisa TOMLINSON on same page

I think the baby, Richard TOMLINSON age 3 mths on the 1891, son of Richard and Elizabeth - might have died in 1895. I can't find him on the 1901?
DEATH: Richard TOMLINSON age 4 - Stone 6b 29  - Dec Qtr 1895

And the year before:
BIRTH: Laurence TOMLINSON - Stone  6b 41 - Sep Qtr 1893

1861: Lansdown Street - Town of Dresden,Parish of Trentham, Staffordshire
RG9 /  Piece: 1914 /  Folio: 85 /  Page: 4
Head: Lewis HURST 43, Potter Saucer maker
Wife: Mary HURST 42, Potter Painter
Son: Richard HURST 13, Potter Presser, (aka : born Richard TOMLINSON)
Dau: Ann HURST 8,
Dau: Mary HURST 3,
ALL born Longton Staffs

MARRIAGE: Sep Qtr 1850 - Stoke on Trent - V17, pg 218
Lewis HURST and Mary TOMLINSON on the same page

1851: York Street - Town of Longton, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire
HO107 /  Piece: 2007 /  Folio: 245 /  Page: 34 (poor quality image)
Head: Lewis HURST 21, Potter Saucer maker,
Wife: Mary HURST 28, Potter painter,
Son: John TOMLINSON 7 (9?), Potter ------er?
Son: Rich'd TOMLINSON 4, Scholar,
ALL born Longton

Was Mary HURST was first married to Richard TOMLINSON before  she married Lewis HURST?
Noting the 12 year age disparity for Lewis between 1851 which clearly says age 21 while the 1861 (if it's the same man) clearly says age 43.  Mary's age is also 'out' but less so at 28 in 1851 and 42 in 1861 (4 year difference)

In 1841, there is an 11 yr old Lewis Hurst in Lane End Longton - seeming mother  named Ann.
HO107 /  Piece 991 /  Book: 7 /  Folio: 7 /  Page: 7

http://www.thepotteries.org/location/longton/longton.html
In March, 1865. Longton and Lane End were incorporated as the Borough of Longton ('long village'

IGI: Extracted entries
John TOMLINSON - chr 20 Dec 1841, Lane End Staffs
Richard TOMLINSON  - chr 20 Aug 1848, Lane End, Staffs
Parents: Richard TOMLINSON and Mary

But having trouble finding anything on marriage  or 1841 for Richard and Mary

Cheers
