Henry Pickering c1740 ?
« on: Wednesday 03 June 09 02:10 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find a birth/baptism for a Henry Pickering who married Sarah Johnson 14 Jul 1763 in Wawne.Henry was a blacksmith and 2 of his sons were blacksmiths so I think it may be a family trade.I have checked Wawne and Leven registers but no luck and nothing shows in the IGI.
Has anyone run across this family?

Hi Ed,

As you say you've checked Wawne and Leven registers, does that mean you've found the 1763 marriage entry? The reason I ask, is that the entry on the IGI is one of those submitted by a member of LDS church, so not necessarily to be trusted. If you have found the marriage in the registers, the obvious question is - does it say where Henry came from?

Where were Henry and Sarah's children baptised - usually a good sign where the groom came from - presumbly Sarah was from Wawne?

Have you tried identifying which parishes are near to Wawne (say, within a 10 mile radius) and then checking which aren't covered by the IGI? It sometimes works!!!  Grin

I go to the Beverley RO quite a lot so let me know if I can help. I'm not prepared to do a blanket search of the area, but if you can suggest a parish I can certainly take a look.

Thanks for the offer Jill.
I checked the Wawne parish register and confirmed the marriage, the baptism of Sarah and the baptism of their children.I would hate to think that I missed Henry's baptism.
My plan was to search adjoining parishes and make a note of those with Pickering's in the mid 1700's and then look at those registers in case the baptism was missed.I know that the marriage of Henry Mercer and Sarah Blythe was missed even though entries before and after were entered.
I would appreciate it if time allows on one of your visits to the Beverly RO if you could double check the Wawne register for me .There is always the chance I missed the entry or did not go back far enough

Thanks

Hi Ed,

I couldn't see a baptism for Henry in the Wawne PRs either, but the fiches were all but illegible in places. When I have more time, I'll ask to look at the originals in the "back room".

Was it the fiche that you looked at?
