Ancestor was William Fleetwood Varley, a famous water-colour landscape artist, who is supposed to have died in February 1856 at 9 Spencer Square, Ramsgate in Kent but despite searching the deaths for every possible combination &/or incorrect spelling, I haven't been able to find his death. All the art websites (including the Tate Museum) say he died in 1856 and this was the info given to me by an art historian who was researching William but no death can be found to confirm this. I'm not sure which parish Ramsgate would have been in, presume Thanet.
He is supposed to be buried in St George's Parish Church but the historian said he couldn't find the grave and something about the crypt being moved.
At the time of his death he was living with his daughter & her husband, Lavinia Clara & Joseph Conder.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I start now, or access to St George's records to prove he was buried there?
Kind regards Debra (Brisbane, Aust)

Hi Debra
William Fleetwood Varley died Thanet 1856 Q1 2a 393. I am sure this is the number as it is quite faint.

Oh you are so brilliant. Big hugs to you both.
I'm amazed I didn't get the Gentleman's Magazine entry when I googled because that comes up often for others and usually in the first few results. He definitely doesn't show with that registration entry when I search Free BDM, which explains why I've never been able to find him, I guess he was so faint he got missed.
Off now to order his certificate. Thank you again. So very much appreciated as I've been searching for several years.
Kindest regards Debra

Hi Debra
How far back have you got with the Varleys? I have a 4xgreat aunt by marriage who was a Sarah Varley born c 1760 and a cousin of the John, Cornelius, (artists) Elizabeth (m William Mulready,) generation. She leaves money to their children in her will in 1836. She married George Marsh in 1775 and Willliam Woodham in 1779 in London. If you can provide a link I will be very grateful.
Regards

I've gone back to Richard Varley born circa 1660 at East Redford, Notts. and his wife Ann (surname unknown) I then have their son Samuelis born circa 1683 at Stow-in-Lindsay, Lincolnshire and his wife Douglasia (surname either Whitaker or Scott but I'm leaning toward Scot or Scott) They had 7 children, 6 of whom I have confirmed from the Epworth parish register the 7th was Cornelius born circa 1720 but that page in the parish records was damaged or missing so whilst the name continues down the tree I couldn't confirm his birth. I have included him as a child though on my tree. I have the next generation for 2 of Samuel & Douglasia's children, one being Johannis (John) grandfather of the famous artists/inventors. The other being their daughter Elizabeth whom I am sure married Richard Peck and had a son of the same name. From Johannis' children I have 2 generations I've followed - Richard the father of the famous ones. The other being William born 1750 at Epworth, Lincolnshire who married Catherine Massey on March 21, 1784 at Gressley in Nottinghamshire (unconfirmed though) They had 6 children all born Epworth (confirmed from register). Two of those children I have marriages for and one I have the children born Epworth.
I don't have a Sarah born c 1760 but it is said the famed ones uncle was also an inventor and his name was supposed to be Samuel. I have such a person, Samuel Varley born 1744, so he could be the father to your Sarah. I just remembered I had a reference to Samuel & a Sarah. The following is what I found in the parish records:
Bishop's Transcripts for Parish of Epworth
Christening entry: Samuel, son of John & Elizabeth Varley
Whilst no marriage entry is found in Epworth there are 2 entries with reference to Samuel Varley. The baptism of Mary Ann Varley on February 14, 1798, daughter to Samuel & Sarah Varley. The burial of Sarah, wife of Samuel Varley on April 3, 1798.
IGI records show to marriage for Samuel Varley circa 1798. Sarah West & Samuel Varley on February 13, 1797 at Walkeringham, Nottinghamshire. Sarah Stinson & Samuel Varley on April 27, 1795 at Breedon on the Hill, Leicestershire.
It is believed Samuel was the uncle reported to have taught Cornelius Varley the art of instrument making and given the way they used to name their children, perhaps they had a daughter named for the mother? There were quite a few damaged or missing pages from the records which doesn't help.
Everything I have on Epworth is from the parish records which went into the early 1800s but the Varley name stopped in 1797. There is a website which has more information on Varleys from the Isle of Axeholme near Epworth. It's called red1st.com and I did a search and there wasn't a Sarah for 1760. It asks for a joining fee but I was still able to search. Their records went back further than mine so that is why I got the parish films to check their information.
I hope this helps a little.
If I can help with any further research or you want to share my research please ask. regards Debra
