Bit of a longshot here. I am researching my wife's family - a many time's Great Aunt was Sarah Garland (nee Tilley) born in Parkstone, Dorset in 1805. I cannot be positive of her whereabouts after 1841 when she was living with her 4 year old son, Henry, her parents and others in Parkstone. From someone else's tree I arrived at Sarah's death in 1882. The only one I could find was in Shepton Mallet, and lo and behold on the 1881 census was Sarah Garland age 75 living in Lower Lane, Shepton Mallet, and born in Parkstone, Dorset. No idea why she would have moved to Somerset, but then I looked for her son. In Shepton Mallet Gaol I found Henry P Garland, born 1836 in "Broadmam" Dorset. Presume that is Broadmayne, but I have not traced his birth, his parent's marriage, or his father's presumed death (or even first name!). Anyway, what I am really looking to find out is why he was in Gaol and how long for. If his mother died in 1882, he may have gone anywhere when he got out, but any details would be welcome. Any idea of where to look for newspaper records would also be welcome, as one of my father's Great Uncles was a "newspaper proprietor" in Weston-super-Mare in 1881, which might provide an interesting bit of research for the future.

Hullo and welcome to rootschat.
If I were chasing this up I'd try to find out the name of the newspaper covering Shepton Mallet where he was jailed. Then I'd email the Local Studies Library nearest to the newspaper's source and ask them for help. There may have been a newspaper article/item on him at the time of his being sentenced... if you're lucky.
Have you found Henry P Garland on 1881 census? It is online and free to search... at familysearch site.
Looks like you need to fossick around a bit and see what turns up..
Keep us posted please..

Hullo again, Another thought... why not ask the library where the records for Shepton Mallet Jail are archived?
And have you searched National Archives using Henry Garland as the search term? Maybe there are quarter session records there.

Richard, We've all been there, as far as not looking things up when we had the opportunity. ... And many of us have not asked living old relatives about things that we are now chsing on RC, when they may well have held the clues.
So you're in good company
