Hi,
A while ago I posted a link on here to try to trace my gg-grandfather Joseph Shaw who was born in 1846 Halifax, Yorkshire.
He went with his brother (James Shaw born 1849) and a friend John Albert Drake (born abt 1877) to Montreal, Quebec, Canada on the 28th May 1903. They sailed from Liverpool on the Bavarian.
No records were found for them in Canada (except for John Albert Drake which was much later on). I had presumed they had emigrated to Canada.
Recently I have been in touch with an ancestor of James Shaw who has found James Shaw and his wife Frances in the 1911 census, so it is for definite that James returned back to England sometime between 1903 and 1911.
I cannot find any passenger records for his return journey from Canada to England, and I cannot find anything at all for Joseph Shaw! They were both wire drawers. Joseph's wife moved to Blackpool to open a lodging house, but in the 1911 census it does say that she is 'married', although Joseph isn't with her. I had presumed that they had separated as on the previous census (1901) they are living apart. Sophia in Blackpool and Joseph lodging in Halifax.
I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me try trace Joseph Shaw. It's a complete mystery as to how he just vanished. Maybe finding the passenger list for James' return journey to England might help, as maybe Joseph returned with him.
Any help or advice is much appreciated.
Thank you

Two possible passenger list entries for James' return. There was a James Shaw, 52, labourer, who sailed on the Cedric which departed from New York and arrived in Liverpool on 28 Apr 1904. There was also a James Shaw, 60, coal exporter, who sailed on the Mauretania which departed from New York and arrived in Liverpool on 30 Aug 1909.

Hi Jacquie,
Thanks for your reply and great to hear from you again.
I'm still on the case of the missing Shaw, and I'm hoping that one day I will find out what happened to him
I came abit closer finding out that James returned to England. James Shaw the labourer is probably the most closest in occupation. It's interesting though, as departure for both these men was New York. I'm just wondering if that is the area I should be looking for Joseph in, as at the very start of my searching I was told that it was New York that he went to.
I'm just wondering what to search next
Thanks again
Heidi
