Hello all....... trying to find out any information about my Grandfather Joseph Conlan and his parents.
He was born in Ballybarney, not far from Crookstown in 1906, his Father was Patrick Conlan and his Mother was Mary (Connor), Patrick was down as a Farmer in Ballybarney on Josephs birth certificate.
Any help no matter how small would be fantastic.

there should be records of Joseph and his family on the Civil register. familysearch have an index available online at : http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347

Full registration started in 1864. If you find promising match you can order a research cert from the GRO (www.groireland.ie)  using the index details record type (birth, marriage, death) name, year/quarter, registration district, volume & page

Ballybarny is in the Athy registration district, two registration Districts cover Crookstown - Athy & Baltinglass

The National Archives hope to have both the 1911 and 1901 census data for Co. Kildare available online sometime later this year which should help you search. (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/)

There was only a handful of Conlons in the whole of Co Kildare in 1852 at the time of the Primary Valuation (GV) and the only one in that district was an Ann Conlon of Ballybarney whose house was attached to a forge so her husband may have been a blacksmith.

Ballybarney is in the civil parish of Davidstown and the Catholic parish of Crookstown, likewise my Cahill ancestral home about a mile away at Calverstown Little. By coincidence a Conlon family moved into my ancestral home in the early 1930's and are still living in the district today.

The living person rule does not allow me to mention names but I have been in touch with one of them now in his eighty's whose parents lived to their nineties and he has a wealth of knowledge about the locality. What I recall him telling me was that his parents moved from Mullaghmast when he was eight and he now lives at Kilgowan.

I can try to ring him but he is very deaf .

I have been told that there are no Conlons left at Ballybarney but the old forge still exists, owned by a Dowling. Interestingly at Ballybarney in the Primary of Valuation of 1852 there lived a Michael Dowling who shared a separate parcel of land with Ann Conlon who leased the forge suggesting a relationship between the Conlons and the Dowlings. Only other clue, in Crookstown Churchyard an inscription reads. In Memory of the Conlon Family of Lipstown. Erected by their niece, Margaret Lynch. The townland of Lipstown abuts Ballybarney.

I'll let you know if anything new emerges.

From looking at the 1911 census Joseph Conlan aged 4 was a first cousin of my dad Thomas Conlan, his dad was Daniel born 1873 served his time as a blacksmith in Carrick on Suir. he opened his own forge at Old Grange in 1900 my father continued in the trade untill the 1980s
