There was only a handful of Conlons in the whole of Co Kildare in 1852 at the time of the Primary Valuation (GV) and the only one in that district was an Ann Conlon of Ballybarney whose house was attached to a forge so her husband may have been a blacksmith.
Ballybarney is in the civil parish of Davidstown and the Catholic parish of Crookstown, likewise my Cahill ancestral home about a mile away at Calverstown Little. By coincidence a Conlon family moved into my ancestral home in the early 1930's and are still living in the district today.
The living person rule does not allow me to mention names but I have been in touch with one of them now in his eighty's whose parents lived to their nineties and he has a wealth of knowledge about the locality. What I recall him telling me was that his parents moved from Mullaghmast when he was eight and he now lives at Kilgowan.
I can try to ring him but he is very deaf .
Good luck, J.T.A.

Tony,
I have been told that there are no Conlons left at Ballybarney but the old forge still exists, owned by a Dowling. Interestingly at Ballybarney in the Primary of Valuation of 1852 there lived a Michael Dowling who shared a separate parcel of land with Ann Conlon who leased the forge suggesting a relationship between the Conlons and the Dowlings. Only other clue, in Crookstown Churchyard an inscription reads. In Memory of the Conlon Family of Lipstown. Erected by their niece, Margaret Lynch. The townland of Lipstown abuts Ballybarney.
I'll let you know if anything new emerges.

From looking at the 1911 census Joseph Conlan aged 4 was a first cousin of my dad Thomas Conlan, his dad was Daniel born 1873 served his time as a blacksmith in Carrick on Suir. he opened his own forge at Old Grange in 1900 my father continued in the trade untill the 1980s

Unless there is more than one Conlan family living at Kilgowan I know your uncle who has plenty of knowledge but due to the living person rule I can't mention him here nor can we exchange personal messages until (for security reasons) you have made at least two more postings, so keep talking. The person I know is in his eighties and has told me both his parents, who could well be your grandparents, lived into their nineties. I have been told the Conlans of Ballybarney and Kilgowan are not related but may well be going back in time.
Good luck, J.T.A.

Hi definitely sounds like my uncle, his parents (my grandparents) Patrick & Julia both lived until their 90's - decided to start tracing my ancestors last weekend - not sure where to start there are so many websites, books etc. Have started with the 1911 census and am taking it from there.

If you do one more post I can send you a personal message. What I do know is that Patrick Conlan married Julia Doogue in 1927 and they had about six children, one of them must be your mother or father. I think your uncle told me the family lived near Mullaghmast but moved into the Turf cutter's House at Calverstown Little near Ballymount in the 1930's where the last of the children were born and lived there until 1955.
The Turf cutter's house, formerly known as the Bog Ranger's House was my Cahill ancestral home; we are not related, the only connection being that the families lived in the same house and your uncle has been a great help in giving a description of the place he lived at for about twenty years from the age of eight.

Yes one of the 7 children is my father. He left ireland in late 50's and as you say my uncle is quite deaf so its been difficult trying to gather information that will point me in the right direction.
