William Tolley Marriage, Mary Ann
« on: Wednesday 17 June 09 12:55 UTC (UK) »

hi there, Im trying to find the marriage of a William Tolley, born 1860 Pattingham,Staffordshire, father, thomas tolley, to a Mary ann,

I have found a marriage in 1890, to an ann green? but im thinking thats not the one as the latest census has william write his wifes name as Mary Ann...

That marriage is in Bilston which is also where william did move to later on....

but im thinking as william had wrote himself that his wifes name was Mary Ann, then thats what it will be?

Any ideas? can anyone find a William tolley marrying a Mary Ann? i cant:(

Hi Truebritmega,

Which census do you have William with wife Mary Ann on?

In 1891 he's with wife Ann. There's a stepson Harry Green in the household.

The 1891 census shows a 4 year old son William Tolley, suggesting William could have been married before.

How about
Marriage: William Tolley to possibly Hannah Maria Vickers Jun 1882 Wolverhampton

and death: Hannah Maria Tolley age 32 Mar 1890 Wolverhampton

How long does it say William and Mary have been married in 1911?

I gather you don't have the 1891 details?

William Tolley, head, 31, General Laborer, b. Pattingham
Ann, wife, 30, b. Wolverhampton

so it looks like my mary ann.... is the same as the ann green marriage i have tracked? thats what was bugging me, why she was mary ann... but ann in the marriage details?

But as there are "greens" living in the tolley house, i guess it has to be that mary ann, and ann are the same person? (sorry i know im just thick lol )

yes! it must be them! because I just re stared at your 1901 part, and william is a something wheeler, is the missing word "ash" ? for his daughters marriage cert lists william(her father) as an "ash wheeler" and 1911 has him as an ash wheeler, ironworks

I have no doubt he's the same  man - there aren't many William Tolleys born 1860 Pattingham!

1881 proves the link between Mary Ann and the Murrays, and shows her first husband:
RG11/2816 66 3
Bilston, Staffordshire
103 Wolverhampton St

Patrick Murray, head, 47, Puddler, b. Ireland Dublin
Sarah, wife, 46, b. Staffs Walsall
John, son, 3, b. Bilston
George Green, son in law, mar, 31, Ironworks Shingler, b. do.
Mary a Green, dau, mar, 20, b. do.
Richard S Green, son, 1, b. do. (I suppose this is Samuel)

PS. Yes, I think it says Ash Wheeler in 1901

So mary, or mary ann green, her mother... hmmm had a first husband of Murray, who died... then she married a green?

or is it mary anne herself?... sorry to be so dense  lol

William Tolley has stepchildren named Green = his wife (Mary Ann/Ann) was married to a Mr Green before by the look of it.

I'm not sure whether her maiden name was actually Murray - I'm struggling to find the family before 1881 so far. (Mr Murray could be her stepdad, for instance)
