I think ive got it!
I have the 1881 census on an LDS disk and i looked at the neighbours, it reads the household of 103 like this

Patrick MURRAY   M   47    M   Dublin, Ireland
   Rel:   Head
   Occ:   Puddler
Sarah MURRAY   M   46    F   Walsall, Stafford, England
   Rel:   Wife
John MURRAY       3    M   Bilston, Stafford, England

George GREEN   M   31    M   Bilston, Stafford, England
   Rel:   Son In Law (Head)
   Occ:   Ironworker Shingler
Mary A. GREEN   M   20    F   Bilston, Stafford, England
   Rel:   Daur (Wife)
Richard S. GREEN       1    M   Bilston, Stafford, England

So from that, I assume that My Mary Ann... who was married to a Mr Green, and Patrick and Sarah Murray were her parents?

Yes, looks like it, but I can't identify the Murray family in 1871 or 1861  Undecided

OK, I think I've got it.

It seems Mary Ann wasn't a Murray after all. There doesn't seem to be a (Mary Ann/Ann) Murray marriage to George Green, and also I found it odd that Patrick and Sarah have a young son age 4 on the 1881 census, but no other children in the age range between Mary Ann and this little John.

Look at this - check out the address and compare with 1881

1871
RG10/2953 69 3
Bilston, Staffordshire
103 Wolverhampton St

Sarah Hill, head, wid, 36, Formerly Laundress, b. Bilston
Dennis Hill, son, 14, Coal Miner, b. do.
Alfred A Hill, son, 13, Coal Miner, b. do.
Mary A Hill, dau, 9, scholar, b. do.
/
Patsey Murray, lodger, unm, 36, Puddler in Iron Works, b. Ireland Dublin

There's a George Green to possibly Mary Ann Hill marriage in Dudley district, Sep 1879. Not where we expected them, but not that far away ... Unfortunately it's not on West Midlands BMD therefore we can't be sure they married each other and where exactly it took place.

So it seems Mary Ann was Mary Ann Hill, really, and her father was Sarah Hill's husband, whose name was Alfred as this 1861 census shows (just before before Mary Ann was born)

1861
RG9/2008 37 18
Bilston, Staffordshire

Alfred Hill, head, 32, Coal Miner, b. Bilston
Sarah, wife, 29, b. do.
Henery, son, 12, scholar, b. do.
Denis, son, 5, scholar, b. do.
Aron, son, 2, b. do.

An Alfred Hill dies Sep 1864 Wolverhampton 6b 313

Are you still following me?  Tongue

So - trying to find out Sarah's maiden name now. The only Alfred Hill to a Sarah marriage in Wolverhampton district I can find is:

Jun 1849 Wolverhampton 17 375
Alfred Hill to either Sarah Clee, Sarah Hinks or Sarah Holmes

The 1851 census tells us which Cheesy

1851
HO107/2021 686 36
Bilston, Staffordshire
Wolverhampton Street

Aaron Holmes, head, 58, Stone Miner, b. Bilston
Margaret, wife, 49, b. Wolverhampton
Aaron, son, 21, Stone miner, b. Walsall
Amelia, dau, 16, Banks girl, b. do.
Rosanna, dau, 14, b. do.
John, son, 8, b. do.
Alfred Hill, lodger son in law, mar, 21, Stone Miner, b. Worcester Stamford?
Sarah Hill, wife, 19, b. Stafford Walsall
Henry Hill, grandson, 1, b. Bilston

No! Sarah 'Murray' was Mary Ann's mother, previously married to Mary Ann's father Alfred Hill Smiley

(don't know if she ever actually married Pat Murray)

Also, I'm sure the William Tolley/Ann Green marriage is the right one - remember she just uses Ann in 1891.

The marriage you found on the IGI above also shows Mary Ann's father's name = Alfred Hill  Cheesy

And you even have Sarah's parents - Aaron and Margaret Holmes!  Cool

http://www.wolverhamptonarchives.dial.pipex.com/stpeter_index1.htm

Marriage Aaron Holmes - Margaret Law
31 Jan 1820
St Peter or Collegiate, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire
Witnesses William Vaughn/Samuel Hancher

You'll find Margaret's christening on the same site.
(It's also on the IGI and on FreeREG

Alfred Hill B:  26 Jul 1835
Worcester, Worces., England
which also carries his line on further, but im not sure hes Our alfred birth either?

Well done with the Holes! (I keep going to type her as Homes lol )

Not sure Holes is that much better Tongue Grin

As the censuses give 2 different birth places for Alfred, I reckon it would be safer to order the Alfred Hill / Sarah Holmes marriage certificate to check his father's details.
