ELLIS of Norton Fitzwarren
« on: Wednesday 17 June 09 14:28 UTC (UK) »

Hi

have run slap bang into a brick wall regarding one of my 2nd GGFs, a William Ellis who I believe was born circa 1834 in Norton Fitzwarren but as yet I have no confirmation of that.  All I do know for sure is that he married Sarah Chapman of Old Cleeve (confirmed in FreeBMD as Williton) in 1856.

I have one child recorded that I know of, Florence Maria bc1858 (Vol5c p431).

Any help appreciated.

thanks

Got him in 1861 transcibed as Elliss still in Norton Fitzwarren in Norton Street

William Elliss 27  Hatch? Maker
Sarah Elliss  32  formerly servant
Florance Elliss 3
Charles Henry Elliss 1

RG 9 Piece 1619 Folio 48 page 11

I cant see Florance or Florence in later cenuses. Is she your direct ancestor, is which case she must be somewhere or I wonder if she died, but cant see a death either?

Hope this is of help.

Thanks Jan

I owe you. I knew I could rely on someone here to help me.

Florence Maria Ellis is my paternal Great Grandmother.  She married a John Harris on 4 July 1878. I have her death recorded as 1901 (Apr-Jun quarter) Bath.  I know my Grandmother, Laura May was born (the last of Florence's 8 children) on 19 Feb 1901 so I am guessing that possibly Florence died of a post natal infection.  At this time Florence and her husband John Harris were living in Monkton Coombe.

I wonder why her father doesn't appear in the 1851 census?

Thanks again,
Frank

I'll have another look for him in 1851. Strange that Florence isn't with them in 1871 as she would only have been 13. I suppose she might have been a servant somewhere or with relatives.

I'll let you know if I find anything.

Possible baptism of Sarah CHAPMAN at Old Cleeve on 17 Feb 1828, daughter of Hugh and Hannah of Old Cleeve. Hugh was the parish clerk.

Hugh CHAPMAN married Hannah BURTON at Old Cleeve on 18 Nov 1820.

FreeReg has the children of William and Sarah baptised at Norton Fitzwarren

Florence Maria 11 Apr 1858
Charles Henry 9 Mar 1860

Hi again

Found Florence in 1871 transcribed as Elles

RG 10 Piece 2375 Folio 67 page 19

John Weaver  29           Miller born Staplegrove Somerset
Ada Weaver   32           wife   born Lorelands Devon
Ernest Weaver 6           son   born Staplegrove
Ada L Weaver  4           dau   born Staplegrove
Sydney  W Weaver  2   son   born Staplegrove
Jane Harvey  13            gen dom servant born Staplegrove
FLORENCE ELLES 13     gen dom servant born Norton Fitzwarren

Living at Mileend Cottage (could be Millend) Staplegrove Somerset

Still can't find them in 1851 I've tried: Ellis. Elliss, Elles and Elless but no luck.

Me again

This could be William Ellis in 1851

HO107 Piece 1923 Folio 238 page 16

Transcribed as WILLIAM ALLICE aged 16 born abt 1835 Norton Somerset working as a servant ( Ag Lab) for John May  and his family a farmer of 35 acres Staplegrove. John was 62.

We're getting there!

Frank,

Have you managed to get any information on James Ellis and Charlotte Ellis - other than the 1841 census? Wedding date, maiden name, parents etc would be useful.

I am decended from Walter (your William's Brother) and James and Charlotte were their parents.
