Hi, I saw your details when I fed in Youles family from March. I am trying to trace my relatives also and have found my great grandmothers name was Youles and they cam from North Witchford, March. her name was Sally to us but I think it must have been Sarah as Sally comes from Sarah. She had a sister called Susan who emigrated to New York and settled in Canada. I have a diary of Susan's journey by ship to new York which was fascinating. I would be very interested to know if you have any other information. My great grandmothers married name was Savage which was my name and the family I am tracing.

Hi, welcome to Rootschat.
Do you have any dates which might help us to narrow down the search. When did Sarah/Sally marry Mr Savage and what was his christian name?

I can only find one family that fits the names you’ve given:
The only marriage on Freebmd at http://freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl between a Sarah or Sally Youles and a Savage is in Colchester in the Dec quarter 1896 where the bridegroom is George Savage. If you order the marriage certificate, if you don’t already have it, you’ll get fathers’ names.
In 1901 living at 150 Butt Rd, Colchester were George Savage head marr 28 Grocers assistant b Newington London Sarah Savage wife 26 b Benwick Cambs George Savage son 3 b Essex Arthur R Savage son 1 b Essex
1891 - can't find her
1881 On the Common, Benwick, Cambs Robert Youles head marr 44 engine driver b Benwick Mary Youles wife 42 b Benwick Sarah J Youles dau 12 scholar b Benwick Mary L Youles dau 10 scholar b Benwick Salley Youles dau 7 scholar b Benwick Florence Youles dau 5 scholar b Benwick Robert T Youles son 2 b Benwick
1871 Piccadilly, Benwick Robert Youles head marr 34 engine driver b Benwick Mary Youles wife 32 b Benwick Martha Youles dau 12 b Benwick Susan A Youles dau 5 b Benwick Sarah J Youles dau 2 b Benwick Mary E Youles dau 3mths b Benwick
So it seems as though Robert and Mary had two daughters, one named Sarah, and another named Sally, as well as Susan who emigrated. Using Freebmd again there’s a Sally born June quarter 1873 in North Witchford registration district which includes Benwick

Many thanks for the information, I have found quite a bit and have been to Benwick etc. One thing I cannot understand. My great grandmother was always known as Sally. There was a Sally Youles born in 1873. Also a Sarah Youles 1869 both born to Robert Youles. Sally was my great grandma but although an identity card my dad found stated her name as Sally and her death certificate says Sally but her marriage certificate that we sent off for says Sarah Youles. We know there was a Sally and a sister Sarah. It seems that Sally used her sisters name sarah, it is clear on the wedding certificate. We cannot understand how or why she would have done this, any idea. Sarah was born in 1869

Perhaps the vicar, when he asked her what her name was, assumed Sally was the shortening for Sarah, so wrote that in the register
Did she sign her own name in the register?

Stumbled across this site as passing time of day surfing. My surname is Youles and my father was from Benwick. Unfortunately he and his brothers are now all deceased. There are though a few Youles still living around the March area.

Dear Goldiepop,
Thanks for the PM - unfortunately I have been unable to get a reply to that message so decided to make a post here on main page.
My grandfather was Robert Taylor Youles. You mention Oliver, Robert and Ben - his sons, my uncles - there were more brothers and sisters. I am not that familar about the family but I spoke with my mother this evening about your posts.
