Fabulous photo and a gorgeous village! Houses to die for .....
Have you had a look on Microsoft Maps (or I think it's Bing maps now) - a lot of places give the option of a 'birds eye' view.
I'll be interested in seeing a photo of the same place taken from the same angle today. Good luck!

I agree that it's in an odd place - it's looks as if it's in someone's graden.

From Google Maps it looks like the memorial has been placed in line with one of the main entrances to the village.
There's a road called "The Bunny" which leads towards it, so it would be visible for a long (well, sort of..) way before entering Longstock. Maybe at the time The Bunny was the only entrance to the village?
The church is only about 100 ft away, but then again it looks like everything there is only about 100ft away!

Well bearkat was right and to him/her go my thanks. It was the one at Longstock.
Interestingly the cottage has hardly changed. I had expected it to have become one home but it still exists as two seperate homes.
This is the best view I could take that was as close to the original as possible due to the 10ft high hedge.

P.S. Sorry about the poor quality of the image. The Rootschat download system kept rejecting my jpeg file as too big and in the end I took it down to its lowest quality level.
If you would like a good copy let me know and I can email one to you.

Congratulations Sotonian, glad we got it right!
And how nice to have two identical photos taken decades apart!

Well done !
I thought that hedge we could see in the Google image might be a problem.

The big elm tree in the background of the original has gone ... Dutch Elm Disease I'd guess. Thank God I live in Brighton where it never really took hold, and the beautifully ugly old things are everywhere.
