DOCK records Bermondsey 1840's William Challis
« on: Wednesday 08 April 09 13:35 UTC (UK) »

One of my Challis ancestors William Challis was a Foreman in the Docks in 1841, do you know if any dock records exist so I might be able to find out what Dock he worked in.
He was living in Baden Place Crosby Row Bermondsey in 1841.  He died in 1846 in Holcombe Buildings of consumption. aged 56.

Thanks for any advice on this.

Regards

Crosby Row is between Guys Hospital & Long Lane. Baden Place is still there and just to the south of the Whitesmiths Arms (to the left of the pub in the picture: http://deadpubs.co.uk/LondonPubs/Bermondsey/CrosbyRow7.shtml).  As this location is close to London Bridge the obvious work location is the Pool of London, but the nearest docks would have been over the river to St Katharines or the London dock next door. About as close as the London dock on the south side would be the Surrey Commercial docks.

There is reference to Holcombe Buildings in Charles Booth's notebook: http://booth.lse.ac.uk/cgi-bin/do.pl?sub=search_catalogue_pages&arg0=Holcombe+Buildings&arg1=and

Holcombe's (OS 1872)/Holcomb's (OS 1914) Buildings was very close to Crosby Row, just the other side of Snowsfields. Although it was still showing in the OS of 1914, it has since disappeared under the expansion of Guy's Hospital.
