Robert Holt & Nancy?
« on: Wednesday 17 June 09 18:23 UTC (UK) »

I am searching for the marriage maiden name of four of my Great...etc relatives all from Lancashire.

I don't know if this a common occurrence but on four sets of relatives I am unable to trace the maiden name of the female. I have already seen how fast and efficient some of you are so any help at all for these families would be appreciated.

1) Robert Holt B: 1855, Clayton, Lancashire, England married to Nancy or Nancey B: about 1858 Matlock, Derbyshire, England. I am not sure what year they got married but do know they had children named Martha, William, George, Hannah and John. Can anyone tell me Nancy's maiden name so I can continue forward and if so how they did it?

2) John Unwin B: 1857 in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England married to Elizabeth ? B: 1868 in Ashton, Lancashire, England. Again I can't seem to locate their wedding date but do know they had children Martha Ann, George, John, Thomas and Ann as I have got a family photo.  He later remarried Sarah ? 1856 in Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England and had three children to her. Again I can't locate Sarah's maiden name and its driving me insane.

3) William Taylor B: about 1857, Northwich, Cheshire, England married to Caroline ? B: about 1858, Northwich, Cheshire, England.

4) Lastly Thomas Robinson B: about 1855 in Manchester, Lancashire, England married a Mary E ? B: about 1855, Manchester, Lancashire, England.

1st day on the site and love the community already.

Dave

Hello Mum  Grin

you just beat me to it! I found the marriage and checked her in other censuses to make sure. Additionally, Bradford is more or less next to Clayton.  Wink

best wishes David

I haven't found a marriage to Caroline, but I think he was married to Agnes in 1891.

Dave

I looked them up on the 1881 census  -  found the age of the oldest child from that and then looked for a Robert Holt marrying a Nancy before the date of the first child   Cheesy    Luckily, Nancy was not a super-common name Wink

Then, having found the marriage and her maiden name, look in previous censuses to check that there was a Nancy Goodwin born about that time in the place stated.

That's just a broad outline - it doesn't always work so easily  -  they may not have married at all;  they may have been married ages before the eldest child was born;  they may have married after the child was born.   Also - they might be called John Brown and Mary Smith  -  Robert Holt and Nancy Goodwins weren't thick on the ground  Cheesy
