Hi sheddyg

Mmmm ... could actually have several meanings.   Wink

Are you asking in relation to a specific voyage ?

If you can give year / name of vessel / NZ province where ship arrived, then we can probably give a more definitive answer.

If you just do a search "guaranteed immigration" at Papers past you get some good refs and explanations
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=HBH18640302.2.3.2&srpos=3&e=-------10--1----2%22guaranteed+immigration%22-all
this one explains that some people had been nominated from the colony others agents had selected them.
Over the years there were many schemes to get settlers, some had passage paid, pledges to work, sponsored etc or paid to live and settle specific areas

Archives has some records otherwise you often see adverts in the papers where people need to repay passage etc..
Bye

Cheers Althea  ... that's what I was heading towards.  Smiley

[The term (rather strangely) could also apply to those who  didn't necesssarily qualify as assisted immmigrants (perhaps due to age restrictions), but wished to make the journey to NZ and thus were able to fund the voyage themselves.  i.e. Unassisted immigrants "guaranteed" passage as long as it was self-funded.]

Many Thanks Lu and Althea - interesting link. Smiley

The "Wild Deer" sailed from Greenock to Otago (Dec 6th 1873 - Mar 9th 1874)
Mrs Catherine BOWMAN - and her daughters on board. I am guessing that husband Richard was already there and had applied for "guaranteed immigration" for his family and probably had to pay passage money - which must have been quite a lot for a large family. The family were Irish - not sure whether that makes a difference Undecided. And I think Richard worked on the railway (engine driver) so maybe the railway people encouraged immigration.

Hi sheddyg

Do you have Richard's death record ?     That should give you an idea of how many years he had been in NZ (... although "years in NZ" it not always stated absolutely accurately, being supplied as it is for death certs, by a third party).

I spotted the following newspaper article, "Richard BOWMAN, Engine driver, witness in a court case in Christchurch in 1870".
Maybe your man ?   Wink
