Charles Henry Bishop
« on: Wednesday 17 June 09 19:38 UTC (UK) »

Hi to everyone,

My uncle the above named arrived in New Zealand in 1925, as part of the 'Flock House' scheme. He died in Auckland in 1974. Any ideas where I can find out where and what he did in those 49 years, he must have paid taxes etc. Any help greatly appreciated

Are you in NZ?
If so you could look at Electoral rolls
old telephone books at Auckland libraries
Did he have children? find them via sites such as old friends

What cemetery is he buried at, check records, burial records etc

Bye

Hi Colin,

Maybe if someone has access to the Auckland Public Library or even the Wellington Public Library they could check this out for you:

The early phone directories sometimes had a person's occupation next to their name so there is a chance that if he is located in the phone directory that he will have his job listed as well.

Also if someone can get to the National Library or somewhere else that has electoral rolls.   It's a bit of a long shot just like the phone directories as you would have to try and find the right Charles Bishop.

In the Archives NZ search engine Archway there are two records of insolvency for a Charles Henry Bishop between 1968 and 1973 but they are restricted so not sure who can get access to them even if you did write to them to ask.

Wonder if you should contact the Ministry of Defence to see if he served in WW2?  A service record would have maybe next of kin, occupation on sign up, address, etc.

Cheers

Hi Colin   Smiley

I'm guessing that you may already have some information concerning the Flock House Scheme, but if not, then a "google" search, will turn up quite a lot of helpful information.

"Flock House -  was set up in the Manawatu region by New Zealand sheep farmers as a debt of gratitude to British seaman.   The scheme benefitted 635 boys and 123 girls, the children of British seamen either killed or wounded in the First World War, who came to NZ to train as farmers" :

The Manawatu region however  ...  is a long way away from Auckland, and whilst your uncle died there, it may not necessarily have been the place where he spent his working life ??

Possibly, as he had received training in farmwork, then that was the vocation he followed ?     But between his time at Flock House, and at Auckland, he could have lived in any rural community within the country ?

For Electoral roll searches (as suggested earlier) we need to know, where a person lived.
There are directories which have surname listings for the whole of NZ, but these don't list every male in the country ... and
there is difficulty if there are numerous persons of the same intials, christian names / surnames.   (I mention these things, because the impression may have been given, that it was a fairly easy task to locate information, by having someone simply just visit a library ).

Do you know if Charles married  ??

Think the Flock House records are available too somewhere.

There was an article in the latest NZSG magazine about Flock House and the origin of its name, plus another short article about the records. Can't remember exactly what, as I am at work. Will check tonight if nobody beats me to it.

No, we won't beat you to it, Ian  ... by all means, go ahead.   Smiley

[Just a quick "google" revealed "an Official Flock House" website (a bit slow to download, so I lost patience)  ... and also something at the "Old Friends" site).

Found the article.

It appears that the majority of records are actually photographs, transferred from the Flock House library to Archives NZ.

There is a list of them on Archway.

Just found some more info from Flock House - A History, published in 1962.

CH BISHOP was in the No 5 Draft and arrived on the SS Hororata in 1925. Gives his home town as Portsmouth.
