Help Wanted Registration District for Bramley
« on: Wednesday 17 June 09 20:11 UTC (UK) »

I have the George Johnson family in the 1841 Census for Bramley, he died between 1841 and 1851 ... on the BMD site I do not see Bramley, where would this death be registered?
Also his son George died between 1841 and 1851.
Elizabeth Johnson is a widow in the 1851 Census for Bramley, she died between 1851 and 1861, I do not see Bramley as a place of death on the BMD site either, where would this death be registered?

There are so many deaths of George and Elizabeth Johnsons in this time period, I have ordered a few death certificates from Leeds but they are the wrong Johnson's ....

I have spent a fortune on dud certificates ... can someone please advise what was the registration district for Bramley for these deaths in this time period.

Thanks so much

Hi Linda,

To save wasting money on the wrong certs, You can either ask the local register offices to check for any known details before you buy.
List of Register Offices at http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/regoff.html

Or you can do the same at the GRO although they charge for this
 www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

There is a part of the form where you can ask them to check references and they say that if you have done your own searching in the GRO indexes and are unsure about the entry, they offer reference checking online. The charge is £3 which is included in the £7 cost of the certificate if it's correct.  A certificate will only be issued if the entry matches the checking point you give them.

For any bmds you look up on freebmd, click on the registration district highlighted in blue after the name, this brings up a separate page where you can click for information on which towns and villages are covered by that district

I forgot to say Bramley came under these registration districts

1837 - 1862    Hunslet
1862 - 1863    Kirkstall
1863 - 1904    Bramley

So you probably need to look for deaths etc under Hunslet reg district
Still 10 possibles for Elizabeth 1851-1861 and just one for George in 1847

Thank you very much for your speedy replies ... and Barbara that helps me alot to narrow down my deaths ... I think I will go for the Hunslet district.

A son, David Johnson died in 1863 and it shows up as Bramley, so you are spot on with this .... thank you, thank you ....

The death for George is probably right, but you need to check with the register office for Elizabeth's 10 possibles!

Good luck
