Hi All

I have been looking at 'Ancestry' & have seen something that is making me curious but times being as they are can't access it due to not having the right subscription Sad

It is a record for Ethel Maud Doel returning to Liverpool. I wonder if the gaps could be filled in please?

HI Ricky

So sorry but we've been having computer problems (hard drive gives up). Sometimes I read things, loose the computer & forget what I've looked at Sad It's getting quite a problem. We've tried everything (hubby used to work for a computer store). Add to that two small children under 3 & my memory is pretty stretched.

Thanks anyway. It was what I was looking for but sadly not the lady I was looking for. It's a long story but my great great uncle William Doel lived in America with his wife & her sister. His wife had a habit of using her maiden name on census' & both lied about their ages. On top of that William goes 'missing' around the birth of his only child. The story told is that he returned to the uk got ill & died but there is no record of him returning or dying here.

She goes on to become a US citizan & live with her sister for the rest of her life.  He sister was Ethel Maud Swain but given the lies these people were telling it seemed unusual to see a Ethel Maud Doel.

The search goes on.

It may be the case that William ended up in Scotland - which would explain why he doesn't necessarily appear in the English Index's. If any of the following death records look like him then let me know.

1893   DOEL   WILLIAM       0   KELVIN   GLASGOW CITY/LANARK << Unlikely!
1918   DOEL   WILLIAM HENRY   63   LIFF~ BENVIE AND INVERGOWRIE   /ANGUS
1971   DOEL   WILLIAM HENRY   80   DUNDEE (ETCETERA)   DUNDEE/ANGUS
1985   DOEL   DAVID WILLIAM   56   DUNFERMLINE   /FIFE

Cheers

Steve Wink

P.S. even if the above are all nonesense. what sort of year was he born/died?

HI Steve

William was born 1885 is Salisbury, Wiltshire. He is said to have returned to the uk after his father (also William) became ill with the flu in 1920. He is then meant to have returned home about the time of his son Alfred 'Dean' Doel's 1st birthday. Then he stayed & was meant to have died 3 years later

William snr however didn't die until 1922. He had a heart attack. Which is why myself & Dean's daughter have been talking about floorboard burials Grin

In the 1919 US census William's wife is calling herself by her maiden name. It is also strange that at the time she was days away from giving birth. William is named on the birth cert but said to be living & working back here. Add to that the fact that she refers to herself as a widow even after she's divorced her second husband makes for a strange tale.

Okokok, Let me get my head round this.

William Doel Jnr was born in 1885 an Salisbury. He then marries a south african lass called Violet Dorothy Swain (you never mentioned her name - I found your tree on ancestry Cheesy) They then sailed out as husband any wife from Liverpool abord the Carmania 23 Sept 1913 headed for Pittsburg. Specifically Woodland Road where Violets mother stayed. Her name was, apparently, Frank (Francis?) Freeman - again odd surname considering but that's what the manifest says - honest. His Father "W Doel" lives at 33 Lugard Road, London. Anyway neither of them have previously been to the states at this point - NOT True as you will see!

Now, this entry indicates that William is a Butler (allowing for dodgy handwriting). The interesting thing happens which I change the name Doel to Doll (since I figured the word could easily be confused by a transcriber) and sure enough a Butler called William DOLL b.1886 born in England travelled from NY to Liverpool arriving in 4th May 1912.

Also, a couple of years earlier, in 14 Feb 1910 William Doll (a butler again) travelled to Pittsburg from Liverpool. His father is living in Kensington, London. He was travelling to see his Aunt Mrs Morris - who I've noticed you are already aware. So we know this is definately the right guy. btw this record also confirms he is born in Salisbury so this is cast iron correct.

to summarise the journeys were as follows:

Solo Journey NY (orig Pittsburg PA) to Liverpool arriving 14 Feb 1910
Solo Journey Liverpool to NY (on to Pittsburg, PA) arriving 4th May 1912
With wife Liverpool to NY (on to Pittsburg, PA) arriving 23 Sept 1913

There is no sign of him returning therafter to the UK again.

There must also be a record of him travelling outward bound to NY prior to 1910 - there probably is I just havent seen it yet.

I know what you mean about "liars" on census entries. I had a great great grandparent who was sailed back and forth to australia. We was never around at the time of census records but I did find one where he must have stayed over in the UK but not at home with his wife and kids. I know for sure the record is accurate but he calls himself a widow despite going on to have a further two kids to his wife. I've also noticed that occassional use of maden names is not uncommon. This Usually happens in the early years but rarely as a widow (must be somethign to do with respect for the dead I suppose!)
