Mcfaun's in Donegal?
« on: Monday 13 July 09 20:33 UTC (UK) »

Looking to confirm some information of an ancestor William Mcfaun. I show him born in Donegal, Ireland 19 Mar 1798 and married Mary Holmes in 1830 (don't know if Mary was born in Ireland or Scotland). At some point they lived in Scotland and had a son James about 1832. They emigrated to the US about 1849.  Is it possible to confirm William's birth in Donegal?  Also, I show his father as John Mcfaun (also spelled Mcfawn) born Ireland about 1770 and married in 1794 (don't have wife's name).  Sorry I don't have a county for John but thought Donegal would be a start. Many thanks for any info on the family's Irish heritage!

Welcome to Rootschat. Donegal is the name of both a county and a town in that county but since civil registration of births began 1864 in Ireland you need at have an exact location (parish if not townland) to start searching for church records (if they exist) and you will also need to know the family's religion for this.
Here's a good source for Donegal research-

Family still there on 1901 census

Thanks very much both of you for your fast replies! Researching my family has been a challenge - and the answer could lie in pronouncing the family name. I  posted a question under Renfrewshire Scotland where I believe James was born.  It turns out the family name is McVan - and William McVan and Mary Homes were from Ireland (unfortunately no town or parish) - James was born in Renfrewshire.  I guess I'll begin my search again with McVan!  Thanks again.
