432073 Sgt Willaim Mowe 55th Div Sig Coy RE, MM & MSM
« on: Thursday 18 June 09 09:05 UTC (UK) »

I have been involved with researching the St Helens Royal Engineers for some considerable time  and currently, my research time is being directed to this gentleman who won both the Military Medal and Meritorious Service Medal for his bravery during WW1.

I know he was the son of John Henry Mowe and Ellen Mowe, both of 4 Lingholme Road, St Helens. William was born in March 1896. He was still registered as living there during WW1 as his name appears on the AVL.

I have found him on the 1911 Census and via the St Helens Cemetery search, the burial place of his parents and maternal grand parents. I can not however find when he died or where he was buried/cremated.

All his male relatives seemed to work for Pilkingtons and my assumption is that he was also employed by the company.

I have as yet been unable to find any mention of him in the local papers.

Sgt William Mowe's medals: Military Medal (MM), War Medal, Victory Medal & Meritorious Service Medal (MSM)

Dotty,

Thank you.  I must openly declare my ignorance; I am fine with military research but family history still has me baffled.

Where do I look up the reference you mention?

Thanks for the help.

Hi Mark

Welcome to Rootschat!

Dotty looks as if she's gone offline, but as she has a year reference, maybe it'd from Lancashire BMD / Cheshire BMD sites.

From the reference you can get a marriage certificate which would give their fathers, residences, occupations and fathers occupations and witnesses.  Also the exact date, church or record off and which denomination if it were a church.

Also, if you know the residence you can look in the BMD Indexes in a main library on fiche or online at various places - som free bmd, but a bit late.  Also on paid sites.

The good bit about your date is that by this time the mother's maiden name is given in the index.

You can also look in trade directories if you know the town or the old telephone directories.

Another thought:  My Mum worked at Pilkington Glass many m0oons ago for a very short time, and they had a magazine.  I've just seen one old copy at a house, but if you have a date, the marriage may appear, or other information.  Maybe they have an archive?

Hope it helps.

I'll have a look.

Emms,

Thank you.

The magazine is called "The Cullett".  I know there are some issues at ST Helens library.  I had not thought of looking through them!

I will post my results as I find them.

Thanks for you help.

Wow, that was a quick reply.  And I was just trying to think of the name!  Now you tell me I don't think I ever knew!

If you're in St Helens, there may be more you can find without the expense of certificates.

I'll have a look.

Modified:
Another though, now I know you're in St Helebns, have you thought about electoral registers.  They're probably in that library.  A few at least rough addresses would help though.

Best wishes

Emms,

I'm not in St Helens.  I have made several trips to the library, but none in the last year.

The voters list is a great idea.  I cn't find him on the St Helens cemetry site, so I wonder if he moved away?

Hi Mark

I'm wondering if they moved away too.

Can't see the marriage but this may because it's not on the site yet, or it's a military marriage.  Dotty will tell you where she got that from.

On free bmd but only child that fits is this one is in  St Asaph!  There may be others not on here as thios is quite late for free bmd.

You can buy a certificate from the Local record office or from GRO Southport.   The GRO now have an online ordering service.

Mowe  Norman W  Evans  St.Asaph  11b 551
for March 1922 (Jan to March quarter).

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

It costs about £9 now, but more without the code.  If you think you're in with a chance it may be worth it!

Other sites are online Parish Clerk (OPC) and familysearch.org.

Best wishes

Emms

Sorry I've got to go out.

I'll look in later.

Good luck!

Ellis

No problem at all.  Thank you for showing an interest.

It is very important that the individuals who served in WW1 are not forgotten by this or future generations. This is why I am trying in my own small way to preserve their memory by researching individuals from the St Helens RE.

Regards

Mark
