Might be worth opening a file under Gloucestershire to get some comment on the size of Swindon Village. It would have to be quite a decent size village in 1940 to have a 60, Groundwell / hill Road. Toby.

Hi Judith, Tricky one and frustrating too. Depends where you live what you can do without going to great expense. At the National Archive in Kew they have some service records but those I have looked at were for WWI. I don't know about WWII. The best bet , I think, is to follow any lead you have. I imagine there must be a service number and also a Regiment on the service record. Regiments have records too. If you are sure it is Swindon then the Swindon Local History unit may be able to help. Often an economic approach for something important i.e. to avoid travel expenses + B&B is to get a record office to do some limited research. It can be worth while. Good luck, Toby

Hi, there is a Groundwell Road, it is right in the middle of town. If you find Regents circus it runs west to east, towards Drove Rd. Hope this helps, Ruth
ps If its easier to find, look up Holy Rood RC Church which is on that road next to the school.

I wonder if the Groundwell Road address was just the road where the premises were that your next of kin signed on as a soldier, or other service personnel, rather than his home address. Just a thought.

I know there's a Groundwell Road, but the one quoted on the document is Groundhill which as far as I know never existed!

The local reference library couldn't find it, either, so obviously a mistake, hopefully this means the rest of the info given was wrong as well.
