Can anyone tell me if there was a Groundhill Road in Swindon around 1940, please?
Google shows a Groundwell Rd but I don't know if this is the same place.
TIA

I have never heard of a Groundhill Road but there was, and still is, a Groundwell Road. It runs from Drove Road to Commercial Road. Does this make sense? Toby

Thanks John and Toby
I don't know Swindon at all, but I've come across the address as that of a next of kin on a service record. I'm pretty sure that's an error in itself, for various reasons, but I thought I'd try and find out a bit more. I'll contact the local history library there and see what they can come up with.

Hi Judith, I have a Swindon directory which might help. Do you have a house number in Groundwell / hill Road? The Local History Centre also have data on all street names which stemmed from W.H.Hallam's Swindon Street Names. Toby.

Not as easy as I thought. At one time Swindon Directories showed complete streets as well as alphabetical name lists. My directory is 1952, so perhaps a little late and it is also only alphabetical. Do you have a possible name too? Toby.

In 1952 there were 37 Rose entries but unhappily none in Groundwell Road. The nearest that I noticed was an H. Ross at 77, Groundwell Rd. Sorry couldn't help. Toby.

There is S. Ann Rose, 103, Farringdon Road S. G. Rose, 13, Reading St. Both of these roads are near the railway and about half a mile + from Groundwell Road. Hope one of the above is what you are loking for. Otherwise you will need to contact the Local History Centre. Toby.

I don't know, it doesn't give a county. I'm ashamed to say I only know of the one in Wiltshire!
