Beldon Marriage Problem
« on: Thursday 18 June 09 10:59 BST (UK) »

Hello

IGI has a marriage between Thomas Beldon and May Shield at Warden on 24 Apr 1824. The George Bell collection has the same marriage.

However the transcripts of the Diocese of Durham on the LDS search site shows the marriage was between William Beldon and Mary Shield.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Tony

Tony,

Does her appearance on a census, eg 1841, 1851, resolve the question ?

George Bell was renowned as accurate transcriber.

You have to remember that the Bishops' Transcripts were copied from the parish registers

Looking at the image closely, click here then go to page 129
you'll see that the groom's name at the top is William, but the copied signature is Thomas!

As Michael says, the census should help, or a look at the original parish register

Thanks for all your help.

I had not noticed that the Bishops' transcripts said Thomas where the signature would have been. It is Thomas that I expected. Confirmation would be great.

Tony, I got the opening days wrong... Record Office open Wed-Sun ( I said Sun-Wed) But anyway i went today.

The marriage record was easy to find-there were only three marriages in 1824. Yours in April, one in May and last one in Oct.

" 24 April 1824
THOMAS Beldon of the Chapelry of Newbrough of the Parish of Warden and
MARY Shield of the Chapelry of Newbrough of the Parish of Warden, by Banns,
with consent of parents
Witnesses Christopher Charlton and Mary Hedley.

The names Thomas and Mary looked quite clear.

Just a wee bit of a question.... the original record should have held the handwriting of  five different folk- clergy, two spouses and two witnesses. Howver the signing by the couple looked very similar. Maybe clergyman, wrote it for them and omitted the bit about " his/her mark"   ?

Had a browse for Beldon baptisms (1824- 1830) Found none !

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Looking at the holdings of parish records ( on GenUKI site) maybe it was not usual for me to find no Beldon bapts.... although the couple lived within the bounds of the chapelry of Newbrough, perhaps marriages were only in the mother parish/Warden, but bapts celebrated in NB chapel ?

Hello and thanks for your help

The children were born at Wall and baptised at St John Lee - they can be picked up in census data.
