Fresh pair of eyes needed please
« on: Thursday 18 June 09 10:44 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I am trying to sort out siblings for my gg grandfather William ALLSOP. I am lucky that the family resided in Wirksworth and so I have access to the transcribed parish records on John Palmer's wonderful site. However I am having problems and would welcome a fresh pair of eyes. All events occurred in Wirksworth.

Here goes

Wandale ALLSOPP married Ann PEARSON on April 21st 1794

First known child is Ellen born 12th Jul 1795
Next are twins
William (my gg grandfather) and John born 13th May 1797
Ellen, William and John were baptised 13 Sep 1797
Then
Hannah born 17 Jun 1799 baptised 10 Jul 1799

No more baptisms that I can see

This where the confusion starts

There is a burial for a John ALLSOPP on May 24 1807 son of Wondale and Hannah - now I know Hannah and Ann can be interchangeable but there is  Wandell and Hannah (BUXTON nee TAYLOR), having children overlapping with Wandell and Ann, who had a John born Jan 24 1790. So which one dies?

Then what happens to Ellen? No marriage or burial found

There is more , the picture in 1841 is

Greenhill, Wirksworth
Wandall Allsop 75 Miner
Ann do 70
William do 40 Velvet Weaver
Hannah do 40
Mary do 30

William didn't marry till 1842 in Duffield and states he is a bachelor.

Hannah would appear to be the one born 1799 (no obvious marriage or burial)- she appears in 1851/61 with Mary, they are listed as unmarried sisters.
So it would look like Mary is an unbaptised child of Wandell and Ann born c1805. However I found this

Mary dau Wondale/Ann buried Jun 5 1819 age 11!

At this point my head exploded Shocked Grin

Hi Trish

Thanks for laying that out

The IGI is definitely confused about the death of John as I checked the original entry ages ago and it says his parents are Wandel and Hannah not Ann. As for Hannah, John Palmer has her as daughter of Wandel and Ann not Hannah as on the IGI!

So does it help or not - no just adds to the confusion Huh Grin

It would help if the Allsops didn't continually recycle names.

Jan Wink

Just found confirmation that Hannah must have been daughter of Wandel/Ann not Wandel/Hannah

Burial 1799 mar 14 ALSOP Hannah(wife)Wondale/(Wirksworth)

Well I can understand why you are going crazy Grin

At least you have found something concrete re Hannah Smiley

There are several possible marriages for her in Wirksworth though.

Trish

Sadly I haven't as my Wandel's parents were Wandel and Hannah (nee Smedley) so the Hannah who dies in 1799 could be her and this one

1830 Feb12 ALSOP Hannah(Wirksworth) age 77

be Hannah (formerly Buxton nee Taylor) !

Aargh! I'm going out for a breath of fresh air

Thanks everso for the Helen/Ellen marriage - looks good Cheesy

Oh dear Helen/Ellen Stafford gives her birthplace as Kniveton not Wirksworth - still possible I guess as she wasn't baptised till 2 years later, maybe Wandel went down the road for work. Any Lead Mines in Kniveton I wonder?

I can't fine Helen/Ellen in 51 Huh
