Hi A letter acompanying an 1884 birth cert just received states... You might have expected this to be handwritten rather than typed.."
Further it states that new legislation has meant that information given at the time now has to be deleted and that the Registry can not provide it!
I know the parents of this particular child did not marry until a year later. I also know that the mother may not have married her previous partner whose surname she uses on the birth cert.
She was in fact married in England before immigrating here.
One is thus left with an impossible situation if you didn't have "inside" famly info!
This woman had a maiden name say "Brown" She legally married say "Green". He died. She had a partner say "White' She then had a child in 1884 say "Black" before she married Mr Black a year after the birth
What are BDM's witholding from certs which might make a huge difference to how one compiles a family tree??
How or where does one look for the legislation which now prevents one from getting the full information provided at the time?
Grateful for any advice!
Dale

Hi Dale
I too have been the recipient of what BDM refer to as "a White Copy" (limited information supplied in respect of a late 1800's birth) ... but that was in the days before BDM provided their (nonsensical) "explanatory" letter. (As I recall, I was more peeved at receiving 3 lines of info, in return for 20 bucks, spent ! )
Seriously, I would throw all your questions straight back at BDM !
AND ... ask them to provide you with a copy of the relevant law !
But don't do this by email (you'll only receive a daft quickfire response). Write them a letter ... that way, they are forced to give a little more consideration to your concerns.
Best of luck ... and do let us know how you get on ?
Lu

PS : At the time of receiving my "white copy", I "googled" myself silly trying to find "answers". Hours were spent wading through articles online, and I didn't ever find anything that satisfactorily explained the situation. (The law is complex ... and the law is also "an ass" !)

Thanks Lu In this particular case I am attempting to help a friend and was astounded at the reply! The "cert" received has no indication as to WHAT is missing which leaves EVERYTHING open to speculation or perhaps NOTHING!
What concerns me is that my friend has some family knowledge which has enabled us to work around the problem BUT if you were researching the ancestry from perhaps England knowing that a daughter or sibling had disappeared from the family about 1871-1874 you would come to a dead end, so to speak, because of the missing info!!
Need to discuss with the friend and challenge at Ministerial level as methinks this smacks of misinformed clerks similar to the problems experienced with the Privacy Act!
I'll keep you posted! Cheers Dale

This sounds like a recent thread from the Oz board.
Apparently there in NSW bastard or illegitemate are derogatory terms that are deleted. Bob

Kia Ora Taonga You have confirmed my worst fears that words like illegit or bastard have been omitted!
AND as my person (mother) is known to have been marrried earlier that may also have been omitted!
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! Dale

Hi Bob Fascinating - wonder when the Aussies became so sensitive?
I could understand if it was a 1984 cert but not 1884! Cheers Dale

Kia Ora Redroger I suspect you would have to ask that question on the Australian site- i am struggling to come to grips with the new laws introduced here in New Zealand and their application by staff!
Considering the uproar caused by the 1911 census release and the 100 year rule I am confounded that Govt thnks it can withold the truth of our heritage!
If you haven't got everything you want I suggest you go for it asap! Cheers Dale

Kia Ora Redroger To explain! You are currently on the New Zealand site. The "traffic" of people and goods and ships between Victoria, NSW, Queensland, other states in Oz and NZ has always been a feature of the two countries.
Almost all of us have rellies both sides of the Tasman in the past and will have in the future. One of the differences is that Australia had Convict ships while NZ did not, hence a great opportunity for friendly teasing!.
There has always been great rivalry between Oz and NZ usually manifested on the Sports field these days although the 2 countries have stood side by side at 2 World Wars and various other skirmishes hence the ANZAC traditions
These have resulted in a constant stream of banter, teasing, jokes, " taking the Mickey"' out of each other which has gone on for years!
Some of my family left England for Oz in 1857 (legitimately) , their cousins emigrated to New Zealand. It's possible both branches thought they were coming to the same country on the other side of the world.
If you have "lost" rellies do check in both places as there is a strong likelihood they might have travelled seeking employment, better weather , or different lifestyle - it still happens! Cheers Dale
