You have highlighted a valid point- it's amazing how well travelled our ancestors were  once they established themselves in the Colonies!

My gt granpa emigrated 1878 , farmed and raised 10 surviving children before going back to Birmingham to visit his family in 1901 and brnging back his favourite sister to NZ.

A friend has discovered her greatgrandies  took off for Melbourne when the climate in Southland affected the wife's health.

Tis fascinating stuff given the conditions of the times! Gutsy folk our forebears!

Hi Dale, How about this then? My mother's uncle emigrated from England to Australia unaccompanied in 1903 at the age of 14. In 1915 now age 26 he married a girl from the same English village who had gone out unaccompanied in wartime specifically to marry him. She was 21 at the time of the marriage, and aged 9 when he left England, so she is unlikely to have been his sweetheart. The village has a reputation for arranged marriages, but no one will let on about them. Still trying to crack this one.

Oh no!  I love the idea that they were childhood sweethearts  Wink

I have 2 9yearolds in the same class at Conington 1841 , he went to sea ,she went to London, they met up at the home of their employer in London 1861 , married and left for Canada. They went back to Conington to baptise their only son in 1867. Aint that luverly!

I'm a romantic!

In view of the convoluted nature of the family trees at that village (Bottisham/Lode, Cambs) and the reputation among the fundamental baptists for arranged marriages. I stil believe that this marriage was arranged in advance.

Luckily  Roll Eyes perhaps my lot don't have those connections but it certainly looks likely if that was a practice within the faith or that particular village.

Not sure how you'd "prove" that unless Parish records contain a hint?
