1861 Census - Clarification please
« on: Saturday 13 June 09 03:05 UTC (UK) »

This 1861 Census shows Thomas Haylock head 55 Labourer born Little? (Suffolck) Suffolk - in the 1851 Census his birthplace is near Bury (St Edmunds) Suffolk. I cannot find a village near Bury St Edmunds that is called Little?  Shocked

Moderator comment: only small portions of census images may be posted to assist with deciphering.

The name of the place has been transcribed in A*ry as Littleover, but I can't say I have ever heard of such a place in Suffolk.  As you say, in the 1851 he is shown as being born 'near Burry' which presumably is Bury St Edmunds.

I am wondering if you might get more help if you post a query on the Suffolk board.  My family is from Suffolk, although I no longer live in the county, and I find that a lot of the people who respond to Suffolk queries there have an encyclopaedic knowledge of every village and hamlet.

I thought of Littleover as one option - the nearest I can find is Littletown (Farm). Thomas's father Richard was born in Tuddenham, Suffolk. I'll try the Suffolk Board  Cheesy

Thomas Haylock was born c1806 near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk - 1851 Census. On this 1861 Census Ancestry interprets his birthplace as Littlover, Suffolk (I can't find any reference to such a place/village). Thomas's father Richard Haylock was born in Tuddenham, Suffolk. Does anyone have clues re Littleover please?

Hello Rockhopper,

As you say no Little Over in Suffolk, but I think this looks more like Littleorn?

Tuddenham St Mary (the Tuddenham near to Bury) is also close to Icklingham, which with a Suffolk accent could have been Icklin'em.

Still looking though  Grin

Back again later.

In later census, a Thomas Haylock gives his place of birth as Mildenhall, one parish away from Tuddenham St Mary ?

Do you have him in later census returns?

The Thomas Haylock c1806 who I am looking for married Mary Ann Hale in 1824 at Hampton (Wick) - I think that Thomas died in 1869 at Hanworth, Middlesex and Mary Ann died in 1878 at Hendon, Middlesex. But if Thomas is on a later Census I'd be interested - many thanks

I think that the place is Little Ouse, Suffolk (Suffolck and a badly written ouse) which is on the border of Cambridgeshire and Suffolk but actually in Cambridgeshire and the church there is St Johns. It is about 14 miles from Mildenhall, Suffolk and 17 miles from Tuddenham St Mary's, Suffolk Kiss
