James Youens 1861 census??

I have him in 1841 (HO107/297/18) 1851 (HO107/2400/99/43) and 1871 (RG10/5028/53/14) but I can only find his wife and children in 1861 (RG9/3786/34/1).

I have found a "James Young" that fits for age and place of birth, but he is on board a ship Gypsy of Sunderland? (RG9/4474/30) as a mate, although this would make sense with him being a sailmaker in the previous census.

What is the recommended route to double check that I have the right person ie is there any way of checking the ships crew by other means?

Is the James Young you found a married man?  You could try checking the other census to see if you can find him earlier and later with a family, to try to eliminate him.

Crew lists  from 1863 -1913 are on findmypast, and the National Maritime Museum has crew lists for British ships for 1861, 1862, 1865 and later years ending in 5

Upon closer inspection there are 2 James Youngs in the 1861 census, both are of a similar age, married, from South Shields and both are at sea!

Thanks to the website link you supplied, it looks as though the other James Young could be a possiblity as the ship he is on "Athelstan" is registered at South Shields while the "Gypsy" is from Liverpool. Unfortunately there seems to be no information on record for either of them.

Indexed as YONCUS but it is clearly YOUENS

RG9/300 F 69

James Youens Married age 25 Sailmaker Ship Keeper born Durham South Shields

He is the only one shown on the page

Many thanks Robert, I would have never found that myself. Edmund Graham was a Newcastle based ship owner and most of his ships were built by Robert Thompson Jr in Sunderland, so it all fits quite nicely. Off to find a photograph or picture of the vessel now  Smiley
