A great story
« on: Monday 13 July 09 01:53 UTC (UK) »

Met a lady at a garden party yesterday who told me about trip to Europe she had taken a few years ago with her husband. She knew she had ancestors in Sweden but didn't know where...all she knew was the name of the church where they were buried.

They took a train through Germany and went north. Didn't really have an itinerary. Decided on the spur of the moment to take the ferry to Sweden.

Stayed overnight in some village and went to the local church the next day, a Sunday. Didn't understand the service but enjoyed it so much they decided to tell the pastor so.

Waited until the pastor had finished greeting the parishoners. There was only another couple left in the building when they approached the pastor, to whom they spoke in English as they didn't know any Swedish, and had learned that most Swedes know English.

As the pastor was conversing with them enthusiastically, the other couple stepped forward, and said...."Excuse me, but are you Barb and Ed from America?"

They were indeed.

I would like very much to have seen the expression on their faces.

It seems a son or daughter of theirs had been on some genealogy website and mentioned their parents would likely be in Sweden looking for ancestors. The rest of it was pure chance.

Why can't stuff like that happen to me?? Tongue

Oh, and another cool thing that happened at the garden party...a couple of 13-year old boys were there, who knew each other from riding the school bus together. What they didn't know was that they were cousins. They were both amazed and spent much time saying so Cheesy

Cheers,
China

Thursday night husband and I went to pick up some of my trays and tins from cousin's house and he mentioned neighbour (who we also know) had a visitor staying from Dundalk. He's been introduced the night before and when she heard the surname asked if he'd relatives in Dundalk. She was leaving Friday morning so we went over to meet her and not only did she know my husband's relative but said my husband looks so much like his 3rd cousin there except for the colour of the eyes!
