Birkenhead Will and Testament
« on: Wednesday 24 June 09 17:58 UTC (UK) »

Hi there, i'm clambering through my family history and have found myself wondering about a specific ancestor and how i may gain access to his Will. His name was Robert Halsall Jones and he died aged 40 in 1874 in Oxton, Birkenhead. His death certificate lists him as a Book Keeper and i feel fairly sure he would have left a Will which may give more detail about his life. Does anybody know how i can check for this or have any tips at all pls? Thanks for your time,
luke

From 1858 the responsibility passed to the state courts and printed registers have been produced each year, split into national, alphabetical volumes. They can be found in Liverpool Central Library or the Lancashire Record Office up to a certain date, and later entries are on microfiche at Probate Offices, usually within court buildings.

If you want a copy of the will after 1858 onwards you can apply by post for a copy to the sub probate office in York. This website tells you how and has a downloadable form.

It costs £5 to get a copy this way.

The indexes are listed by date of when the Will was proven rather than the date of death.

The index covers the years 1492 - 1940 and contains 130,000 entries. It covers probate documents proved at Chester mainly for Cheshire residents.
