Walker, Birth/Marriage Record
« on: Thursday 18 June 09 22:23 UTC (UK) »

My gggg grandfather was Richard Walker b. c1770 I believe in Mirfield, West Yorks.

I have searched in vain and would really appreciate anyones help/advice in finding anything about him, i.e, birth/marriage or death. His death may have been c1840 but I know so little about him I am embarrased to ask for help. Any help at all would be really welcome. Thanks in advance.

Hi - no need to be embarassed!

What source and what info led you to believe that this was your ancestor? Where did the name come from? And more importantly where did the year of birth come from?

Hi Liz.

Thanks for your reply, I will try to answer your 3 questions.

I have since I first started my quest come across several other folks that have Walker family history, most in the UK and some from Australia. Through a process of elimination, cross checking and double checking where possible, mostly with census info, I have been able to determine with more than a modicum of certainty that Richard Walker b. 19/08/1793 in Mirfield, West Yorks was my ggg grandfather. The line to me from Richard 1793 is as follows.
Richard 1793 married Ann Stevens in Heanor Derbys on 21/7/1817. Their son Henry b. 1825 married Ann Cotton in Derby on 14/9/1884. Their son Richard b. 1846 married Mary Eminson on 25/12/1867, their son Ernest Henry b. 1879 was my Granddad, he married Addie Jackson and their son Kenneth b 1911 was my Dad. I am Kenneth b. 1946.
I had learned second hand that a Richard Walker b. c1770 in Mirfield had every possibility of being Richard 1793 Father, this was from a long standing Walker family researcher based on 'Genesreunited'. In an attempt to verify this I contacted the Wakefield Archives office and was told that the baptism of a Richard Walker was in fact registered with the date of 1st Oct 1769. He was listed as the son of William Walker but no other details supplied.
I know 'one must never assume' and I guess I may have been guilty of this but, things do seem to check out, don't you think? or have I slipped up somewhere, please let me know what you think.
So, now I'm stuck. Where do I go from here? Should I travel to Wakefield and scour their records?
Thanks for your time.

SO have you seen the christening of Richard 1793 to confirm his father was also a Richard?

If so are there other christeings of same couple that could be his siblings?

And then is there a marriage of the parents?

hopefully getting the timings of how and where the family fit together, althugh wont prove if the 1770 is the father, may (if there are lots of older siblings for example) serve to rule that one out!

Hi Lizdb.

I see the need to be accurate to avoid veering off course.

Thanks again.
