I would be really grateful for any help tracing this family as I was given no information at all as a child and it has been an uphill struggle.
Alfred Elisha Sheppard ( my grandfather ) born 1885/6 Lived in Edmonton at 423 Wightman? rd Hornsey. Married Margaret Violet Butler born 1891 in edmonton in 1910. They had three children Ruby Violet Sheppard 1911 to 1981, .Ada Ann Sheppard born 1912 Edmonton, and Dorothy E Sheppard born 1914. I know that Ada married Edward Arthur Denney in 1935. I beleive she had a second marriage but again cant find it...... I would be really grateful for ANY additional information, in particular
Alfred Elisha post 1910. I have been told he was in the army in the First World War but havent been able to find any records. The next thing I know is that in 1935 he is a window cleaner living it seems at the same address. This would be amazing as it was only one room! I have tried for ages to find any of his records, including his death which I believe could have occurred around the early 1960s. It would be nice to know more about him.
My grandmother is even more elusive! I was told she 'went funny' and had to be 'taken away' However my experience so far is that I was rarely told the truth! I have not found her death anywhere, or any further reference to her. I would really love to know what happened to her. So far I have found no descendants of either Ada or Dorothy although I do know the descendants of Ruby Violet as its me! Any info on descendants of either lady would be truly appreciated as it means I may have family somewhere. Its a bit of an uphill battle when you have not been given any information whatsoever, its taken me years to get this far! I have traced Margaret's ancestors to Scotland and am working on that! Many thanks for any kind assistance. Pam
That will be a date arrived at by the transcribers. People were not asked their year of birth on the censuses, but their age (look at the actual images).
For some reason indexers have put an approx year of birth in the indexes, rather than the age that was given. But of course it will depend on whether the person has had their birthday that year or not! Let me explain - it is 2009 now. Someone can say they are aged 9, because they have had their ninth birthday earlier in 2009. That would be indexed as born 2000 (2009 minus 9). However someone else can give their age as 9 as they had their 9th birthday in 2008, but have not had their 10th birthday yet this year (say their birthday is in September for example). They are quite right that they are 9. But the indexers would again say approx year of birth 2000 (2009 minus 9). But correct year of birth for this person would be 1999. Then of course there are the many occasions when the age given on the census is incorrect! whoever gives the info isnt 100% sure of the ages of those in the household.
So always worth getting more accurate birthdates from freeBMD.
To find his parents you can order the birth cert online from www.gro.gov.uk (£7)

Hallo, thank you, I am most grateful. I have managed to get his parents names but am having difficulty going in the other direction ie after 1910. I am having real difficulty finding when he died etc, and even more difficulty finding out what happened to his wife and whether there are any other descendents than the ones named
