Hi I have a copy from the Ipswich Journal c1831 which has this marriage announcement: 'On the 27th ---?, was married, at St. Peters Church, by the Rev Edward Griffin, Mr Robert Chamberlain, butcher of Wickham Market, to Maria, youngest daughter of the late Robert Banks, butcher of this town.' I have Robert pretty well documented (apart from the marriage certificate) but I really need details of Maria's parents. I take it the 'town' mentioned in the newspaper announcement was Ipswich, but I have no further info other than that. There are a couple of family trees requiring this. Can any kind soul help, or at least point me in the right direction please? Thanks Bob C

Catherine Sandys, I WILL find out where you went.

According to the Suffolk Marriage Index, the marriage took place on the 27th December, 1830 at Ipswich St. Peter. The groom was from Ipswich St. Matthew.

Hi Sue Thanks for your reply. The groom Robert was born and grew up in Wickham Market, where it seems he entered into butcherdom. He moved to Ipswich possibly following Banks and had his trade there at St Mary Quay. In 1837 there is an article in the Ipswich Journal where he is convicted of assault on an excise man with friend John Scott. Later in the year there is a notice of 'retirement' and subsequent sale of butcher's ware and also the gig which was mentioned in the newspaper article. This is where he obviously used a large share of Maria and her sisters' inheritance from an uncle to buy outright two ships and have half share in a third with his sister in law Sarah Banks and a quarter share in another. There are a number of court cases involving these people in the Ipswich Journal, as is the loss of one vessel off the coast near Lowestoft, I believe. To pay back the debts incurred due to his 'borrowing' of the inheritance money he had to sell his share of all he owned but could not and he was declared bankrupt. There is a notice of land and tenements which he owned that were sold off. He also was mentioned in a Government paper at the time regarding vote rigging in Ipswich! Much of the newspaper info was provided by a very kind lady who I believe probably frequented this site. I never forget when she saw on one census he was listed as butcher, ten years later as a 'ship owner.' Initially understandably she thought that this had been mis-transcribed - until she came across the Ipswich Journal articles! Robert ended up moving to Barking, London where he was listed on a census as master butcher. He died at the City of London almshouses, Brixton as did his daughter Maria Banks Jones. Sorry to bore you I am still after confirmation of his wife's parents if anyone can help?

Afraid I can't find marriage/baptism details but from the Suffolk Burial Index Robert Banks was bc.1757 and bur.1/11/1829 St. Peters, Ipswich. There is also the burial of a Sarah bc.1767 bur. 26/2/1808 St. Peters - this looks like they could be her parents.

Hi Annette Many thanks for your reply - I think it highly likely you have found Maria's parents, as her elder sister was named Sarah as seemed to be the custom of naming the first child after one of their parents. It certainly gives me scope for further research. Regards Bob C

rsc,
You too can search the Ipswich Journal one of the 48 British Newspapers from Gale Databases available free from Lancashire Libraries.
Just go to http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/onrl/
Join up and in a few days you will be having fun!
If you are abroad or in UK, you can have the same research facility, also Times Online from 1785 to 1985.

Would just like to say a big thank you to Tom for this link - I was unaware of this service and have duly joined and already been searching via my temporary number issued until my card arrives.
Thanks again Tom.

Hi Tom Invaluable link - thanks! I've just discovered from a search of the 19th Century newspapers that a possible relative of my family who had 'disappeared' without trace and was concerning me for some time, was actually in another part of the country in which other of his relatives seemingly independently migrated to. That's within minutes of looking.
