Look up please Port Chalmers school roll
« on: Friday 19 June 09 01:26 UTC (UK) »

I don"t really know where to look exactly

I am looking for school roll of Port Chalmer period after 1875 to 1900 about

I am especially looking to find John MacDonald children

According to electoral roll 1881 John MacDonald was living in Scotia Street, section 85
According to electoral roll 1893  the MacDonald family was living in Magnetic street, Port Chalmer

Hoping a rootchater can help me or give me ideas where to look at  Smiley

Hi again

The HOCKEN Library, Dunedin, has records for Port Chalmers School starting from 1883.

You can get in touch with their reference section, from here >>

Hi Gwenn

Don't know if it helps but a Stewart Ross McDonald attended Otago Boys High School 1903-1906. He was killed in action in 1916. His next of kin was Mrs E.M. McDonald (mother), 13 Magnetic Street, Port Chalmers.

Hi Gwenn

You can check for the children's births on the online BMD.

I found the following  - (parents John and Euphemia Mechie / or Michie)

.... but the online record had them under McDONALD rather than MacDONALD.   > >

1873    Jessie Hepburn McDONALD
[Parents names not recorded]

1877    David Kilgour  McDONALD
1879    Charles Norman  McDONALD
1883    John Milton  McDONALD
[Parents shown as John and Euphemia Mechie/Michie McDONALD]

1875   Matilda Annabel McDONALD
[Parents shown as Euphemia and John McDONALD]

You might want to re-check these ?

[Good idea when you contact HOCKEN library to actually give the childrens names and years of birth.]

Hi Gwenn

The OBHS info came from my copy of the OBHS Centennial Register of 1963 which lists all old boys of the school, incl me. His entry reads "McDonald Stewart Ross (1903-1906) , served in 1914-18 war. Killed in action in France 1916." His next of kin came from the Auckland War Memorial Museum's Centotaph database.

Hope this helps.

Hello again Gwenn

If you go to the Wikipedia website for Otago Boys High School you will see a photograph of the School's main block taken from the street. In front of it you will note an ornate stone gateway into the school grounds. This gateway was erected in the 1920's to commemorate the old boys who died in WW1. Stewart's name will be inscribed on the interior walls of it.

also looking fir school records and have been given amazing link that shows all archives at HOcken libray and includes the High school
http://hakena.otago.ac.nz/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/FULL/ARCHIVESNR/OPHDR/12/27659,164
Record Title  :  Otago High Schools' Board : Records
Display Dates  :  1860-1978
Reference Number  :  ARC-0530

the first search area is at
http://hakena.otago.ac.nz/nreq/fhtml/body.htm
takes a bit of fiddling but you eventually get to classifications such as schools, school reocrds etc. They have tens and tens of different school reocrds for anyone else interested..but would need to pay for research services if can't go in person
