Hello All,
I am thinking out loud here, but really in print, but need some advice.
1. I am looking for the birth about 1880 of Sarah Ann Crutchley, parents William and Eliza, in Christchurch. There is an entry for Ann Laura Crutchley, born 18 Sept 1880. Can Ann Laura be Sarah Ann? Do I have to order this certificate or is there a cheaper way to resolve this.
2. I have just received the death certificate for William Crutchley, died 1926, buried Karori, occupation bootmaker. I was hoping that it would show that he had two marriages - ie the one that produced the child in Question 1. But it only has one marriage to Grace McArtney. Can there be two William Crutchley's with occupation bootmaker in New Zealand?
Newbe - I am in ChCh - so please do not go off to the library for me.
I'm just stuck
Jean

Hi Jean
Are you a member of the NZSG? They have a death cert for an Eliza 9 Nov 1880 & it would appear the spouse is a William….. She could have died in childbirth, or as a result of.
Depending how “honest” they were, the ITM for the 1883 marriage to Grace McArtney might show that he was a widower….(if it is a 2nd marriage)

William CRUTCHLEY married Grace in 1883.
Looks like a daughter "Ethel Maud - 1886" is the first born of that union.
Does the 1926 death cert. for William CRUTCHLEY, show a surviving daughter ("living issue") who was born circa 1880 (and might be the daughter Sarah Ann / "Ann Laura". ) ?

Hi Jean
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,366858.0.html
Just looking at your previous thread re: Sarah Ann CRUTCHLEY ... where you mentioned her divorce.
I see this shows (twice) on Archway >
HILL - Samuel Charles v. HILL - Annie ... alias BARBER - Annie - 1906
HILL - Samuel Charles v. HILL - Annie and McMILLAN - James - 1909
SO ... does that mean that "Sarah Ann" was commonly known as "Annie" ??
Just a thought ... perhaps she really was "Ann Laura" and has changed her christian name to "Sarah" at time of her 1st marriage.

Hello Lu, Yes, the mother is Eliza who died 9 Nov 1880 Yes, Eliza Charlotte is the first child 20 June 1878 - 25 Jan 1881 Yes, This the same Sarah Ann who married Hill, then McMillan, then Cox No, have not yet found Sarah Ann/Annie's death - Just sitting on that No, the death cert for William only shows children of the McCartney marriage
Hello KiwiBren Hadn't thought of NZSG - will send off for that certificate - and that is interesting because no one, absolutely no one else is researching this family - perhaps it is a certificate ordered in error Nor had I thought of an ITM - will compose a message for that later
Hello John Barr Thank you for your input too
So far my heated imagination has this scenario: William Crutchley's wife and first child die in Ch Ch. Grief stricken, he leaves 2nd child Sarah/Laura/Ann with his in laws - Owen and Charlotte Barber - and moves to the North Island, where he starts a new life and never mentions his first family again.
Thank you all, you have cleared my head, and helped me work out the next steps to follow.
Regards, Jean
