Methodist Records - Chester le Street
« on: Friday 19 June 09 02:17 UTC (UK) »

I am researching my family in the Chester le Street/Pelton and surrounding areas (19th C).  The LDS do not appear to have any Methodist records available.
My family do not appear in the relevant Parish records and there is an indication that they were Primitive Methodists. So I have three questions:
1) Is anyone aware of the availability of Methodist records?
2) Does anyone know about the boundaries of the Methodist 'circuits'?
3)Were the Methodists able to conduct marriages in their chapels in the 19th C?
Any advice will be appreciated.  Kim

Just thought, Durham RO should have the records and the main library in Chester le Street might be worth a try too. Someone else with better local knowledge will be along soon  Smiley

Hi Kim

Welcome to Rootschat.  Durham Record Office hold some methodist records for the Chester-le-Street circuit.  My own Grandad's family were Primitive Methodists and I found his baptism there, though this is later than the time you are interested in.  I'm not sure what dates they cover but the Record Office staff will be able to help you out.  Or you could try searching their database on-line:

What names are you researching ? A lot of my ancestors come from the Cheater-le-Street and Pelton area.
Maybe we have a link  Wink

Yes they were if the building was registered for marriages, but under the 1836 Marriage Act a civil Registrar had to be present. Under the 1898 Marriage Act they were not required to have a civil Registrar present for weddings, providing they took place in a building registered for that purpose and in the presence of a duly authorised person normally the priest or minister.

thankyou for your responses.  I am researching TURNBULL & CUMMINGS & HUTHCHINSON families, in West Pelton, Chester le Street & Handenhold in the period 1850 to 1920.
The CUMMINGS' in early 19th C, in Lanchester.

Any connections Susan?

Don't have any of those in my lot (yet) but if you ever come across any Cook or Curry connections let me know   Smiley
