I am looking for a marriage of Henry Watts born about 1794 to Elizabeth ( probably Irwin) around 1823 in or around Loxhore or Arlington.

Henry Watts married Elizabeth Irwin 4 May 1822 at Loxhore. Cann't see any baptisms for them though.
  There is a small paper back book about Loxhore which has a couple of photographs of the local school and chapel outings:- 1904 a Gerald Watts at school, 1910 Jeremy Watts also at school, Lizzie Watts on the chapel outing in 1910 and 1912 .


Children bapt in Loxhore to a Henry Watts and Elizabeth  from 1822 to  1850

Hubby has just found some photo-copies of a transcribed 1851 census
Loxhore - Smithapark - Wats Henry  head  m 58 ag lab born High Bray
                                 Wats Elizabeth wife   50          born Berrynarbour

Smithapark exists today it is a group of houses on the edge of the village not far from the church.
High Bray is about 5 miles from Loxhore and Berrynarbour lies on the coast between Combe Martin and Ilfracombe

Do you know the names of Henry and Elizabeths parents?

Thank you so much for this info. I have been looking on and off for years for this. You have made my day- week - year!

I now believe Henry Watts was born 1792 in Highbray to William Watts and Melior Radford.

Elizabeth Irwin's mother could have been Nancy or Ann. According to 1851 census Henry Watts bap 1825 was living with Nancy Irwin aged 65 in Ilfracombe.

Henry 1825 who is my GGGrandfather and came to Australia in 1860. married Susan Westcott who was from Highbray also.

and found 3 Elizabeth Irwins:- Elizabeth baptised 23 Feb 1800 parents John and Mary Irwin at Berrynarbor
Elizabeth baptised 21 March 1790 parents Joseph and Alice at Ilfracombe
Elizabeth baptised 9 June 1799 parents John and Ann also at Ilfracombe

That probably explains why  couldn't find Henry in Devon in '51 with Nancy and makes it less improbable for her to be his 'gran as in '51 aged 65 she would have only been 15 years older than his mum

Any idea when /where Nancy died?

Free BDM only has the death of one Nancy Irwin but that's in 1852
in Wigton which is way up north in Cumbria /Cumberland.

With information I have just received I believe Elizabeth Watts nee Irwin was the daughter of John Irwin and Mary Ley Witheridge.

John born about 1766 Berrynabour ?
Mary born about 1770 Berrynabour ?

Now I dont know if Nancy is connected or not.

Have marriage of John Irwin and Mary Witheridge as 1 May 1791 in Berrynabour. with 5 children born to them between 1792 and 1810

Anything you could add would be great

I have sent message to tree owner.

They have Betsey Watts dying 1840 and I have found this;

Death,
Betsy WATTS, March 1839, Okehampton, 10 133

I have been looking for William and Elizabeth on Census entries, unfortunately there are 2 couples with similar dates of birth. There is an Elizabeth who uses Betsy also Roll Eyes

The tree I think is the best one has Henry Watts parents as ;

Henry WATTS  chr. 10 Oct 1754, North Molton
Mary BRAILEY chr. 24 Oct. 1764 Chittle Hampton, Devon

They married 24 Feb 1799, North Molton, Devon

There is another Henry with parents Henry and Melior Radford Tongue Needs a lot of confirmation to sort out each set on census and BMD.


NO one has anything on Elizabeth IRWIN
