Migration to USA - John H Collier
« on: Friday 19 June 09 04:58 UTC (UK) »

If anyone has access to migration records, I am looking for information in regard to John H Collier
who was born 1861 Manchester, Lancashire, and migrated to the USA, date unknown

We do know that he lived in Beverley Hills in the early 1900's, with his wife Lizzie, no further information on the family.

Was his mother's maiden name Caldwell?
http://vitals.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ca/death/search.cgi
 - shows a John Henry Collier, 1861-1945, who might be yours.

Can you narrow down the date of emigration any further? Does he appear on any UK censuses or is he shown on any of the US ones?

Hi jorose,

Yes, that's him, no I didn't know his wife's maiden name, all coming together now.
I have census information for John Henry Collier  aged 10, living at 35 Vine Street, Manchester in 1871 census, it was a house and shop, mother was a Muffin Maker, father Auctioneer's Assistant.

I will go further into my documentation and get back to you.  No, I don't an approximate date for migration.

Hi jorose,

Certainly John Henry Collier was living at 25 Belfort Street, Salford in 1881 census.   Don't have 1890 census info

Hi jorose once again

Its early morning here in Australia, so I've got more time to search for evidence.  Now that you have hinted about John's wife possibly being Caldwell, I've checked marriages, and yes I've found John marrying Elizabeth Caldwell in 1889.  Mum referred to her as Lizzie, so that solves that one, I'm sure.
I know they had a son Harold in Canada, and he fought in the 1st World War for Canada, so need to get some records on this as well now.  I wonder if you could check 1890 and 1901 census info for me please, and also 1911 (if you have access to this one particularly)

However, I've also checked migration with findmypast, and cannot see John and Elizabeth migrating to Canada or USA, or Harold their son, but I do have a photograph of all of them in Canada in 1921.

The CA death index shows his mother's maiden name as Caldwell, not his wife, unfortunately (although someone could have made a mistake when giving the information!). The original death certificate would show his wife's first name but not her maiden name, I believe.

Going back to the son, because that's easier to trace:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-100.01-e.php

Harold Collier, b. 1898 Manchester, mother Elizabeth, would seem to be the right one. At the time they were living in Toronto.

http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/index.jsp
 - you can see them here in Toronto. He is listed as John Henry Collier, b. Jan 1861.
They seem to have come separately on the ships - John and son Ernest in 1907, the rest in 1909.
