Migration to Canada - Ambrose family
« on: Friday 19 June 09 05:06 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find my great uncle Ernest Ambrose and his sister Evelyn who migrated to Canada.

Ernest Ambrose was born around 1904/05 Manchester area of England, and if there is anyone who has full access to migration records, would appreciate any assistance that can be given.

We think it is possible that he migrated when he was around 9 years of age or so.

There is an Ernest Ambrose with siblings, Mother Louisa aged 41 and Father Albert aged 38, Ivy aged 5, William aged 3, Eva aged 7, Ernest is 9 and another child whose name I cannot quite read aged 11.(transcribed as Aldridge). They are on the Ausonia going to Quebec, leaving from Southampton, arriving 7th May 1913. Destination is Toronto, Ont.

Tressle,

Thanks for this info, I don't know Ernest's parents names, so this makes it hard, and the ages don't tie in with what I already have for the next generation.

Maybe there might be another Ernest Ambrose on the migration records, at a different date, was wondering if you could assist me on that.   I know he had a sister Evelyn.

Sorry to be so vague about it, but I've been struggling for a while on this Ambrose family

Hi

This Ernest would have been born around 1904/5 and there is an Eva (could that be Eva/e - shortened version of Evelyn) with this family.

There is a birth registration

Ernest Ambrose, 1905 Q4 Salford, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Volume: 8d Page: 157

Do you think this could be your Ernest, if so it might be worth a punt for the birth certificate.

Do you have any other information that might help with the search.

Tressle

Ps. I am going on holiday for a week tomorrow so will read the thread when I get back to see if you have found him.

Hi,

I think I could be looking for another Ernest Ambrose, yes from Manchester area.   I will get back to you when I do some more research on free bdm.    The one I am looking for is an Ernest Ambrose who married a lady named Maud, and I feel he would have been married in England before migrating to Canada.  I am possibly wrong on the 1905 birth.

Hi,

Yes, have checked again, found an Ernest Ambrose born 1891, married 1914 to Maud Barlow, so would have migrated to Canada after then.

freebmd.rootsweb.com also shows an Ernest (1915) and an Evelyn (1917) born to this family

http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action?redef=1
 - in 1921, this family (Ernest/Maud/Ernest Jr/Evelyn) appear to be heading to the port of Quebec.
They may be also shown in 1948 (returning from a trip home to visit family?), and in 1959 (just Ernest and Maud)

Full details from this shipping records might show where they were living in Canada.

Hi jorose,

I am trying one more thing in regard to this Ambrose family.  Ernest Ambrose's sister Eveline (or Evelyn) Ambrose came to Australia, probably around 1914 from Canada.  As far as we know she worked as a Stewardess, she then worked in Australia for a period of time, and returned to Canada, where she married, someone by the name of Wilkinson.

Was wondering if you would be able to assist me in this regard.

Hi jorose,

One thing I forgot to tell you was that Eveline was born around 1890, and I do not know when she migrated to Canada.

http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action shows her heading to Australia in 1914, I think.
As her brother doesn't seem to have gone to Canada until 1921, I guess she probably only went to Canada later on.

I can see Evelyn Wilkinson heading to Canada in 1959 along with Ernest and Maud, is this where you got your info from?
Do you now have any info on where in Canada the family finally ended up?

jorose,

Thanks for this, the only information I've got is from my Mother who is 98 (amazing memory for her age), she spoke of Evelyn working near Sydney and then went to Canada and got married.
Ernest & Maud lived at White Rock Canada, that was their last known address anyway, and mention was made by my Mother that Evelyn was a Stewardess, mentioned something about Niagara.  I probably need to check with my Mum once again.

Obviously Ernest & Maud must have travelled back and forth to England.    They definitely came to Australia to visit my Grandparents around 1966.

Hi jorose,

Fantastic, got it all together now for the Ambrose family in Canada.  Thank you so much.  Was wondering where Sapperton was.

It looks like it's now part of Surrey in BC, about half an hour drive north of White Rock (which is close to the border with the US).

 - this shows Ernest and Maud buried in Surrey (Sunnyside Lawn)
