Women wot Wed
« on: Friday 19 June 09 11:35 UTC (UK) »

I have some women who have disappeared off the Weston family tree, have come in from other trees, or are the children of wedded Weston women.  Most are from  the Basford, Lenton Radford areas of Nottingham but there are some from the Blaby/Wigston area of Leicestershire.  I would welcome any links to other trees, or any help or tips in tracing women after they marry.

Disappeared Weston women:
(birth/baptism)
Elizabeth   1771
Mary   1777
Sarah   1783
Jane   1786
Ada   1884
Kate   1896
Lucy   1895
Lilian   1900
Mabel   1903
Winifred    1923

Women who married Westons (birth dates or marriage dates):

Elizabeth Ward   m1796
Phebe Cassell   m1797
Mary Ann Robinson   1796
Mary A E Langsdale   1836
Elizabeth Eley   1829
Eliza Sanders   1830
Kate Coleman   1886
Hannah Crofts   1858
Elizabeth Langham   1865
Ida Jones   1888
Ma(r)y Ann Frances   1883
Agnes Wright   1883
Phyllis L Martin   m1943
Winifred Waterfield   1897
Irene Tansley   1901
Dorothy M Holroyd   1910
Florrie Martin   1885
Diana McWinney   (probably Scottish)

and finally, girls of Weston women who married

Grace Richards   1882
Ada Richards   1890
Joyce May Elwin   1921
Mary Hinton   1903

Certainly from the later ones, track them through census/BMD's.
When for example do they disappear from the family unit?
What recently-wed women appear with the same age/birthplace of the single women?

I should have said that I have tracked them, where possible through the census details from 1841 to 1911 and for the later ones could spend a long time on t'internet trawling though the GRO records for marriages, but not knowing who they married scuppers any chances following them up.  At £7 a pop it's not cheap buying certificates to find out that you were wrong.  Once they have married then the census is a dead end.  If others "have" my Weston women and wonder what their backgrounds are I can then match them up.  Further details are on http://antill.org.uk

I dont know why you say that "once they marry the census is a dead end". They will still be there!

Anyway - if you have tracked some of them to some extent through censuses, then it would be helpful to know what you have on them, or at least the details and date of the last known "sighting" - otherwise people will just be wasting their time searching for things you already have.

Maybe you can edit your list by putting beside each name the ref number of the last census entry for them that you have.

Tell you what:
Relate what you do know about them for census/BMDs and we might be able to direct you to free/cheaper sources of the info.
Always give the full household andd refs, not just the individual girl.
Try with :
Ada, Kate & Lucy from the first batch.

Good idea Pauline!

Some other tips:

I see from 1891 (RG12 2685 10 13) that Ada and  Kate are sisters.
But there are several other sisters too who are not on your list.
That implies that you have found marriages for them. Sometimes you find sisters are witnesses at each others' marriages - so have a look at the marriage certs for those you have found and just see if there is an Ada or Kate with an unknown surname as witness.  If so, it could just be their married name.

Incidently the family are at RG13 3181 24 40 in 1901, and there are even more sisters there, but again not on your list.
Have you found this family on 1911 to see if Ada or Kate are still at home?

Another fantastic source that I have found for finding married names for daughters is that of Wills - if the parents left a will it often lists all their children, and if the will was made after those children had grown up as if often the case, then daughters are listed with their married names. From experience that is one line not to be ignored.

Ada was last "seen" on the 1901 census as an orphan, at the Hope and Anchor, Lower Parliament Street, St Mary, Nottingham with her aunt, Mary, who had married a John Richards and their children Emma and Grace.  We have tried to find her again but completely lost her (have the DCs for her parents, no clues there).  Her father was a licensed victualler there in the 1891 census.  Kate Weston is the daughter of Harry Weston, and Kate Coleman.  Her siblings were Harold (middle name Langsdale), Frank, Harry, William and Robert Curtis (Curtis is his middle name).  I've googled till I'm blue in the face, and the only lead I've got is for Robert.  With such an unusual middle name, R C Curtis has appeared as funeral company in Wigston, where this branch of Westons settled after their Lenton roots.   A tentative phone call to the company today has initial hopes of making a match!

Sorry looks like the family I found were not them. But a caution comes from that - there is another Ada Weston of same age bn Basford around!

Lets try Kate - what is the ref for her family on 1901?

I see Robert Curtis's birth in Leicestershire in1898 - but only one I can see likely for him in 1901 does not have father Harry or sister Kate ....

We really do need to take these one or two at a time and have full info on what you already have for them.

I started to look thro the GRO index for Weston children in Blaby after 1911 when the mother's maiden name is also listed.  Quite a fecund lot - gave up after 17 women as I have no way of backtracking to check whether they are "my" Westons

Go back to find the marriage which matches - and see if the christian name is one of 'yours'. For starters anyway.

This sort of detective work isnt quick.

But do follow up other ideas too - like Wills, directories etc

And, yes you will have to fork out on some certs - but no one ever said this is a cheap hobby. Actually it is a lot cheaper than most. A few certs compared with a few rounds of golf or a membership of a tennis club for example make it very cheap.

I didnt check your profile to see where you are - but sometimes a day trip to the Local Record office is well worth it. Well, personally I would say always well worth it!
