Isaac Arnold - where and when born? c.1856
« on: Friday 19 June 09 12:01 UTC (UK) »

My great grandfather Isaac Arnold came to Launceston aged 2 years, via Melbourne on the "Mindoro", which left Liverpool on 6 Nov 1858 and arrived in March 1859.
He came with his parents Robert 34 and Eliza 30, and siblings George 8, Henry 6 and Tamar 4 years. I've been to PROV today to look at the copy of the passenger list.

I have found lots about this family in Dorset via the Dorset OPC which has been great, and found birth entries in free BMD for the siblings, but I can't seem to find Isaac anywhere (apart from IGI which gives a birth date of 5 May 1855 in Winterborne)

Can anyone with fresh eyes and brain find a birth or christening date?
Thanks, Louisa

Hello Louisa,

May I begin with what is known and apologies for stating what you already have:
Is this your Robert and Eliza?

1851 HO107; Piece: 1851; Folio: 238; Page: 4
Iwerne Minster Dorset

Robert Arnold 25 yrs  Shepherd b Dorset Winterbourne Kingston
Eliza 23 yrs b Dorset Whitchurch
George H 3 yrs b Winterbourne Kingston
Henry 2 months b Iwerne

this is in Shaftesbury Registration district

Then looking at Registration districts:

1848 Marriage Robert Arnold and Eliza Hook Blandford
1848 birth George Hook Arnold  Blandford
1851 birth Henry Arnold Shaftesbury
1853 birth Tamar Blandford  (christening on IGI)

There is also
Male birth 1854 Shaftesbury
Male birth Wareham
Male birth Wincanton
No Isaac births  Sad

You could apply for a birth certificate with the year(s) of birth you have and specify the parents names.

Sorry I can't be more helpful

Thanks for looking!
Yes, that's them on the census.
I didn't know you could apply for a birth cert in that way, so that's definitely worth doing if nothing else pops up. I suppose entries are sometimes missed when being transcribed from the original to the index?

Hello again,
I was wondering if he was one of the 'Male' Arnolds but I'm not sure re the area. Just noticed that I didn't put 1857 for the Wareham and Wincanton ones. Sorry  Sad Or perhaps he was registered with one name but called another.
I also wondered if he may have been born en route to the port - thinking they may have moved for a while before they set sail.
The ages of the others are slightly out but you would imagine that they would not mistake the age of a 2 year old  Huh
Best of luck with your search- for some reason, my gt grandmother does not seem to be registered - maybe things happened which diverted their attention and they just didn't bother  Undecided
